Edtech startup, upGrad has acquired Impartus, a video-enabled learning solutions provider, and committed over Rs 150 crore towards acquisition and investment into the company.

With this acquisition, upGrad is looking to strengthen its presence in the country’s higher education market.

Impartus creates innovative technology solutions for education, including virtual classrooms that enable learner-teacher engagement. It claims to have onboarded over 280 higher educational institutes, 50,000 teachers, and 6 lakh learners in seven years.

Gaurav Kumar, President (Corporate Development and M&A) upGrad said, “All our M&As are thoroughly thought through, strategic, and aimed at powering career success for every member of the global workforce as their trusted lifelong learning partner.”

Impartus, which is now a 100% subsidiary of upGrad, has been combined into its system and rebranded as ‘upGrad Campus’, as said in the statement released on Monday. “It is looking to close FY22 with around Rs 85 crore revenue, with the founders continuing to run and grow the business independently,” the statement added.

upGrad Campus CEO Amit Mahensaria said, “One of the major challenges faced by graduates in India is their lack of industry-ready and employable skill sets. The synergy of Impartus and upGrad will pave the way for augmenting college education by helping learners upskill with new-age courses, thus elevating their candidature for better career prospects.”

The Indian edtech sector is foreseen to grow ten times over the next five years to reach a $5 billion market by 2025, according to a recent report published by Red Seer Consulting, an internet-focused consulting firm.

“It will grow driven by new reforms set forth, including the increase in public spending (targeted at 6% of the nation’s GDP), relaxation in regulations governing degrees, supply-side capacity gaps, need realization among students and professionals, and transition to a credit system,” according to the report.

upGrad has emerged as a leader in the edtech segment providing valuable courses to professionals. The acquisition will definitely present immense growth prospects for the company. My best wishes to the team of upGrad.
