Fanshawe College gets $1.3M in federal funding to upgrade residence

The federal government is doling out $1.3 million to Fanshawe College to support an upgrade to a 25-year-old student housing complex that will make it more energy efficient.

London North Centre Liberal MP Peter Fragiskatos said on Monday the funding to convert the townhouses on Kestrel Court into net-zero buildings is part of the government’s broader commitment to tackle climate change.

“All governments, but in particular the federal government, have to take the lead in responding to climate change,” he said. “We do so through partnership; that is the way to get there.”

The upgrades, costing a total of $2.5 million, include changes to components and exteriors of 11 of the 68 units, which are expected to be complete and ready for students by September.

The project, funded by the Department of Natural Resources and Fanshawe, will also serve as a research study for making residential buildings net-zero ready, reducing their energy use by a minimum of 70 per cent.

Also as part of the federal government’s commitment to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, Fragiskatos announced $365,000 for a housing project by Indwell, a Southwestern Ontario affordable housing agency. The money will be used to install smart energy technology in a new 34-unit residential building.

“We’ve committed as a government to make sure that Canada’s net zero by 2050, and that work is of course ongoing,” Fragiskatos said. “Energy efficiency, as part of that goal, is absolutely vital.”

Congratulations to Fanshawe College on your funding. This is a good intitiave by the Government to make the housing complex more energy efficient. I wish you the very best in this endeavour.
