Samsung is positioned to lead market sales through a planned chipmaking service price hike of up to 15 percent for new orders. According to industry experts, this adjustment could help offset the financial pressure caused by slowing smartphone sales in India. The domestic smartphone market experienced a three-week sales decline following July online sale events, alongside sharp increases in device prices, particularly for Samsung models. Analysts report that rising chipset costs are forcing brands to increase average selling prices. Despite soft market sentiment, Samsung recorded 4 percent year-on-year growth, while Apple led with 15 percent growth. Overall, experts project India’s smartphone market to contract by 13 percent in 2026, though upcoming festive-season promotions are expected to support demand.
In macroeconomic policy, the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee unanimously decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 5.25 percent, adopting a cautious wait-and-watch stance due to an uncertain economic outlook. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra and Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta noted that a rate hike remains possible if inflation risks intensify. While inflation is projected to ease after peaking in the October-December quarter, policymakers cautioned that elevated food, fuel, and input costs could create broader price pressures. MPC members emphasized the need to closely monitor inflation and global risks prior to any policy adjustments.
At the state level, Uttar Pradesh is advancing plans to develop a dedicated 'Japan City' to strengthen economic ties and attract targeted investments in semiconductors, data centers, electronics, and advanced manufacturing. Speaking at the UP-Japan Investment Meet 2026, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that the state is expanding its industrial base beyond automobile investments, supported by an extensive industrial infrastructure and a 75,000-acre land bank. The event also secured new Japanese manufacturing commitments, including Escorts Kubota allocating approximately ₹2,025 crore for a greenfield facility and Minda Corporation announcing ₹1,166 crore in projects, with participation from over 200 Japanese business leaders.
Meanwhile, the Securities and Exchange Board of India has addressed market integrity, with SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey warning of strict and immediate action against any attempts to manipulate the Closing Auction Session. Pandey stated that attempts to misuse the system will not be tolerated and noted that the new mechanism offers greater transparency and detection capabilities compared to the previous VWAP-based system. To improve liquidity and price discovery, SEBI has instructed brokers to accept after-market orders during the transition period ahead of the 20-minute auction session.
"The recent market updates highlight a cautious yet strategic business environment in India. Samsung's decision to raise chipmaking prices demonstrates how component-level cost adjustments are responding to shifting consumer demand in the hardware sector. At the same time, large-scale state infrastructure initiatives, such as Uttar Pradesh's 'Japan City' and significant manufacturing commitments from firms like Escorts Kubota and Minda Corporation, indicate sustained long-term capital inflow into industrial corridors. Businesses must remain adaptable to shifting monetary policies and regulatory frameworks, particularly as financial authorities monitor inflation and market integrity." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
