NEW DELHI — Demonstrating remarkable fortitude against a backdrop of persistent global macroeconomic headwinds, the Indian economy continues to chart a high-growth trajectory. According to a comprehensive assessment released by the State Bank of India’s (SBI) Economic Research Department (ERD)—appropriately titled “Celebrating Resilience of Indian Economy on India’s 80th Independence Day”—India firmly remains "was", "is", and "will" be one of the fastest-growing major economies globally.
At the heart of this optimistic outlook is the SBI’s proprietary Nowcasting model, which projects real GDP growth to clock an impressive 8 per cent in Q1 FY27. This strong economic momentum is powerfully mirrored in core banking metrics. Credit demand continues to expand at a scorching pace, registering a growth of 19.3 per cent for the fortnight ended July 31, 2026. Simultaneously, domestic deposit growth has accelerated significantly, rising by 15.4 per cent, propelled largely by monumental capital inflows.
Highlighting the unprecedented external sector support, Soumya Kanti Ghosh, Group Chief Economic Adviser at SBI, noted that record capital inflows under RBI schemes have crossed $57 billion and continue to climb. The report emphasizes that stellar mobilization under the Foreign Currency Non-Resident [FCNR(B)] deposits scheme—leveraging the Reserve Bank of India’s concessional swap facility—has already hit $52.3 billion by mid-August. ERD forecasts project total FCNR(B) mobilization to touch $65–70 billion by the conclusion of the scheme, while overall external mobilization, including Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings (OFCBs) and External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs), is anticipated to scale between $80 billion and $85 billion.
Furthermore, the central bank’s proactive management is evident as the RBI has successfully recouped roughly $31 billion of Foreign Currency Assets as of August 7, equating to nearly 55 per cent of the total amount mobilized. This aggressive liquidity management is expected to favorably impact G-Sec yields through enhanced deposit-to-yield transmission, with the 3-to-7-year maturity segment emerging as the primary beneficiary.
On the corporate and domestic demand fronts, the macroeconomic fundamentals look exceptionally solid. An analysis of 2,257 listed non-BFSI companies revealed robust YoY growth in Q1 FY27, with net sales surging by 24 per cent, EBITDA expanding by 9 per cent, and Profit After Tax (PAT) increasing by 4 per cent. Compounding this positive corporate sentiment is a visible, structural reversal in Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) flows—transitioning steadily from capital outflows to robust inflows, catalyzed by proactive policy measures enacted by both the government and the RBI.
Adding further buoyancy to the domestic landscape, the monsoon outlook has witnessed a sharp recovery, reducing the nationwide rainfall deficit to around 13 per cent. Crucially, kharif sowing figures indicate a minimal 2 per cent lag compared to last year, pointing directly toward enhanced irrigation coverage and a resilient rural economy. With forex reserves comfortably hovering at $707 billion, India's macroeconomic architecture stands tall, presenting fertile ground for scaling businesses, venture investments, and long-term capital deployment.
"The stellar macroeconomic indicators highlighted in the latest SBI report reaffirm our unwavering confidence in the Indian growth story. As an ecosystem enabler, we at StartupLanes observe firsthand how robust GDP projections, surging credit demand, and monumental foreign capital inflows directly trickle down into the entrepreneurial landscape. When public sector banking pillars like SBI report an anticipated 8% real GDP growth alongside massive liquidity mobilization, it translates directly into heightened investor confidence, greater liquidity for emerging enterprises, and an accelerated pace of domestic consumption. This macroeconomic resilience proves that India is not merely weathering global uncertainties, but actively establishing itself as the premier global hub for innovation, venture capital, and sustainable business expansion." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
