Kerala has emerged as a fast-growing market for intercity carpooling, with passenger activity on BlaBlaCar rising 50 percent year-on-year. This growth rate outpaces the platform's national growth of 35 to 40 percent, driven by strong road connectivity and rising travel costs.

Kerala has emerged as a fast-growing market for carpooling, according to recent data from intercity mobility platform BlaBlaCar. Passenger activity on the platform in the state has risen by 50 percent year-on-year, significantly outpacing the company's national growth rate of 35 to 40 percent.

The company attributed this regional surge to Kerala's strong road connectivity and well-developed highway network. Additional factors driving the adoption of shared mobility include rising fuel costs and a growing awareness among travelers regarding the benefits of sharing travel expenses.

The growth observed in Kerala aligns with a broader expansion of intercity carpooling across India. During the first half of 2026, BlaBlaCar recorded 12.14 million passenger journeys nationwide, which helped travelers collectively save ₹492.7 crore. India currently stands as the platform's largest carpooling market globally.

According to the company, wider adoption of carpooling offers several operational benefits, including improved vehicle utilization, a reduction in single-occupancy journeys, and lower overall emissions.

Despite the positive trajectory in consumer demand and an established road network, regulatory clarity remains a key factor for the sector's continued growth. App-based carpooling and private-vehicle cost-sharing currently operate within what the platform describes as a regulatory grey area.

Jit Banerjee, Director of BlaBlaCar India, noted that a regulatory framework recognizing the distinction between non-commercial cost-sharing and commercial passenger transport would provide greater clarity for commuters, drivers, and authorities alike. Such a framework could enable states like Kerala to fully integrate shared mobility into their wider transportation ecosystems.

With increasing consumer demand and existing infrastructure, carpooling has the potential to become a more prominent component of intercity travel in Kerala. Clearer regulations could offer added confidence to drivers and passengers, supporting more structured growth for the category while helping to ease congestion and lower travel costs.

"The rapid growth of carpooling in Kerala highlights how regional infrastructure and economic factors like fuel costs naturally drive consumer adoption of shared mobility solutions. However, as the sector scales, establishing a clear regulatory framework that distinguishes between commercial transport and private cost-sharing will be vital for sustainable long-term growth and compliance. Startups operating in grey areas must proactively engage with policymakers to build trust and ensure structured market expansion." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
