Chennai-based Lalithaa Jewellery Mart Limited has commenced its much-anticipated ₹1,700 crore initial public offering, achieving a 0.69x subscription rate on its opening day. Backed by marquee anchor investors and aggressive retail expansion plans, the jewellery major navigates market dynamics amid cautious brokerage sentiments regarding unhedged gold price exposure.

CHENNAI — The initial public offering (IPO) of Chennai-headquartered Lalithaa Jewellery Mart Limited (LJML) officially opened for public bidding on Monday, drawing a notable initial response from investors across various categories. By the end of the first day of bidding, the public issue witnessed a total subscription of 0.69 times, positioning itself strongly as it heads deeper into its three-day bidding window.

According to exchange data, the public issue received aggregate bids for 4,35,54,032 shares against a total of 6,27,61,403 shares on offer. The company has fixed its price band at ₹190 to ₹201 per equity share. Through this IPO, Lalithaa Jewellery aims to raise a substantial ₹1,700 crore from the public markets. The capital structure of the public offering comprises a fresh issue worth ₹1,200 crore, alongside an offer for sale (OFS) amounting to ₹500 crore by existing stakeholders.

Demonstrating robust early confidence from institutional heavyweights, the jewellery retailer successfully raised ₹508 crore from anchor investors prior to the public launch. Allocations to anchor investors, finalized on August 14 at the upper price band of ₹201 per share, saw participation from prominent institutional names including Goldman Sachs Bank Europe, ICICI Prudential Smallcap Fund, and Bandhan Small Cap Fund, signaling strong institutional backing for the brand's business model.

Delving into the strategic deployment of the primary capital raised, Lalithaa Jewellery has outlined comprehensive expansion plans. The management intends to allocate approximately ₹1,033 crore of the net IPO proceeds toward setting up 10 new retail showrooms. This retail footprint expansion is primarily targeted at deepening the brand's market penetration across Tier II and III cities in Southern India, a region known for its high affinity for gold consumption and organized retail jewellery shopping.

Despite the optimistic retail expansion roadmap, market analysts and brokerages have advised a measured approach. SBI Securities, which issued a 'Neutral' rating on the public issue, highlighted that while LJML has recorded commendable revenue and Profit After Tax (PAT) growth over the FY24–FY26 financial cycle, a significant catalyst for this performance has been the sharp, approximately 2.3x surge in underlying gold prices. Furthermore, the brokerage cautioned potential investors that Lalithaa Jewellery currently operates without a formal hedging policy for its inventory, leaving its operating margins inherently vulnerable if global and domestic gold prices stabilize or experience a downward correction.

With two more days remaining for active bidding, the Lalithaa Jewellery IPO is scheduled to close on August 19. Market watchers and retail investors will closely monitor subscription traction in the coming days to gauge broader market sentiment toward traditional brick-and-mortar retail plays amid fluctuating precious metal valuations.

"Lalithaa Jewellery's entry into the public markets marks a significant milestone for traditional retail businesses in Southern India, showcasing how regional dominance can attract marquee global institutional investors like Goldman Sachs. While the 0.69x subscription on Day 1 is a healthy start, the real narrative lies in the company's aggressive expansion blueprint targeting Tier II and III cities, which are the true engines of domestic consumption. However, as highlighted by market observers, operating without a robust inventory hedging mechanism in a volatile gold price environment introduces unique margin risks. Investors must carefully balance the allure of strong historical financial growth against commodity price vulnerabilities as the issue progresses toward its final closing bell." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
