The Nifty 50 index traded lower on August 18, 2026, dropping 0.24 per cent to stand at 24,230. Market breadth showed a mixed picture with an advances-to-declines ratio of 23:27, a metric that requires close monitoring as any shift toward advances could trigger a potential intraday bounce back.
The primary pressure on the index stems from its decline below the key support level of 24,250. Resistance has now formed in the 24,250 to 24,270 region. Market analysts indicate that as long as the index trades below this resistance zone, the near-term outlook will remain negative.
Technical projections suggest that Nifty could slide further toward the 24,120-24,100 range in the coming sessions. To invalidate this downward movement, the index needs to surpass the 24,270 threshold. Only a decisive move above this level would open up upside potential to test 24,320-24,350 levels again.
Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 August Futures contract traded at 24,257, down 0.55 per cent. The futures segment broke its crucial support level of 24,290, reinforcing a bearish outlook pointing toward a potential fall to the 24,100-24,050 range in upcoming sessions.
Intraday resistance for the August futures contract is pegged in the 24,290-24,320 zone. A strong upward movement above 24,320 would be necessary for the contract to recover toward the 44,400 level (as referenced in index data), though current trading strategies lean toward short positions.
Trading participants tracking the August futures are noting entry points around 24,257, with recommendations to add short positions on minor rises to 24,285. Risk management guidelines for these positions suggest maintaining a stop-loss at 24,340, with trailing stop-loss adjustments downward as the contract hits successive targets at 24,210, 24,180, and 24,140, ahead of an exit target near 24,120.
"Market corrections and breaches of key support levels require disciplined risk management from traders and investors alike. When an index slips below established thresholds like 24,250, market sentiment often turns defensive. It is crucial for market participants to closely watch advances-to-declines ratios and adhere strictly to stop-loss strategies rather than reacting purely on impulse during periods of heightened intraday volatility." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
