State-owned mining major NMDC posted a 2% rise in consolidated net profit to ₹2,005.71 crore for the June quarter, driven by strong iron ore sales and a surge in production volumes.

New Delhi: NMDC, India's largest iron ore miner operating under the Ministry of Steel, has reported a steady financial performance for the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year. The state-owned enterprise posted a 2 percent rise in its consolidated net profit, reaching ₹2,005.71 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. This compares favourably with the net profit of ₹1,967.46 crore recorded in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

The company’s top-line performance also exhibited positive momentum. Total income for the April-June quarter rose by 1.5 percent to ₹7,142.54 crore, up from ₹7,038.97 crore registered in the first quarter of FY26. The primary growth engine for NMDC remained its core business segment—iron ore sales. Revenue from iron ore sales witnessed a robust growth of approximately 10 percent, climbing to ₹6,802.12 crore from ₹6,199.15 crore in the year-ago period.

Operational efficiency and volume expansion played a pivotal role in these results. During the quarter under review, NMDC produced 15.12 million tonnes (MT) of iron ore, marking an impressive 26 percent surge compared to 11.99 MT produced in Q1 FY26. Sales volumes also saw an upward tick, standing at 11.73 MT against 11.52 MT in the corresponding quarter last year, reflecting a steady year-on-year growth of 2 percent. As a critical supplier contributing 20 to 25 percent of India's total domestic iron ore demand, these operational metrics underscore the company's vital role in supporting the broader industrial and manufacturing ecosystem.

Commenting on the strategic roadmap, NMDC CMD Amitava Mukherjee stated that the company has begun FY27 on a strong footing. He highlighted that higher production and improved profitability reflect the resilience of operations and strategic discipline. The management's focus remains firmly fixed on achieving an ambitious production target of 60 million tonnes in the current financial year, with a long-term vision of scaling capacity to 100 million tonnes by 2030 by improving productivity and unlocking greater mineral resource value.

Financial disclosures from the regulatory filing also shed light on capital allocations and corporate exposures. As of June 30, 2026, trade receivables from Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), primarily tied to iron ore and pellet supplies, stood at ₹4,712.47 crore. Furthermore, providing an update on its proposed 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel project in Karnataka, NMDC revealed that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Karnataka Vijayanagar Steel Ltd (KVSL), has already paid an advance of ₹639.61 crore to the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB). The payment covers the cost of 2,857.54 acres of allotted land. While KVSL is currently in possession of the land, the formal lease agreement is yet to be executed.

As India continues its rapid infrastructure expansion and industrial growth, public sector enterprises like NMDC are uniquely positioned to anchor the supply chains of heavy industries. With aggressive capacity expansion plans underway and stable financial health, the mining titan remains a bellwether for the country's core economic trajectory.

"NMDC's consistent performance in the June quarter highlights the critical strength of India's public sector enterprises in driving core industrial growth. Achieving a 26 percent surge in production while simultaneously expanding profit margins amidst global commodity fluctuations is a remarkable feat. At StartupLanes, we closely monitor how legacy PSUs and heavy industries adapt to modern efficiency benchmarks, and NMDC's ambitious roadmap to scale production to 100 million tonnes by 2030 is a testament to visionary long-term planning. Furthermore, their strategic investments in downstream integration, such as the Karnataka steel project through KVSL, demonstrate a holistic approach to value creation. This robust operational momentum not only secures domestic supply chains for India's booming infrastructure sector but also reinforces investor confidence in heavy manufacturing and mining ecosystems." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
