To compete with Apple, London-based startup Nothing releases Phone (1)

Nothing, a British consumer technology company, unveiled its first smartphone, the “Phone (1),” at a King’s Cross, London, event in an effort to compete with Apple and Samsung.

Without knowing any of the Phone 1’s specifications, 200,000 customers made a non-refundable deposit prior to the debut. The London-based startup has officially confirmed that the Phone 1 will have an aluminium frame, two 50-megapixel sensors, a 120Hz AMOLED HDR10+ screen, and a Snapdragon 778G+ engine after much fanfare and rumoured leaks.

On July 21, it will be made generally accessible for a beginning price of £399.

Nothing’s entry into the smartphone market will see a UK company challenge the dominance of Apple, Samsung and Google. Nothing, according to Pei, will create its own ecosystem, and the Phone (1) already includes Tesla controls.

After quitting OnePlus the Chinese consumer electronics company, co-founder Carl Pei created Nothing in 2020. Tony Fadell, Casey Neistat, and Kevin Lin were among the people that helped Pei raise $7 million in startup capital.

The venture capital arm of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, then contributed $15 million to its Series A. GV (formerly Google Ventures) was the next to do so.

Then, in July of last year, Nothing released its debut item: a pair of wireless headphones under the name ear (1). The first 100 sold on the online marketplace StockX.

Nothing raised a further £53.5 million in its Series B earlier this year in March, bringing the total capital to £110 million.

Nothing is an exciting and innovative startup that will disrupt the smartphone industry. I’m certain this company will keep on flourishing in its excursion ahead. My best wishes to the entire team at Nothing.
