Passenger vehicle retail demand is projected to grow by over 9-10 per cent year-on-year in August, while two-wheeler demand is estimated to rise by 18-20 per cent. The broad-based growth is supported by early Onam sales in southern markets, improving supply chains, and a low base effect from the previous year.

Retail demand in the domestic automobile sector showed positive momentum in August, driven by the onset of the festive season in southern markets, improving supply chains, and steady inquiry levels across both urban and rural areas, according to a report by Yes Securities.

Passenger vehicle retail demand is expected to grow by more than 9-10 per cent year-on-year (YoY) during the month. The report noted that a low base from the corresponding period last year—caused by purchase deferrals ahead of the implementation of GST 2.0—provided a statistical tailwind to headline retail growth. Demand in Kerala led the passenger vehicle segment, with Onam sales registering a growth of over 20 per cent YoY.

Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and alternate fuel powertrains, particularly compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles (EVs), continued to drive total industry volume additions. Channel checks indicated a continuous surge in CNG and EV demand, with inquiries and bookings increasing by over 30 per cent, supported by new product launches and consumer sentiment regarding E20 fuel. Among original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) recorded higher booking growth compared to peers, while companies like Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) and Hyundai observed similar trends, resulting in peak waiting periods extending to three to four months.

The two-wheeler segment mirrored this positive trajectory, registering an estimated 18 to 20 per cent YoY retail growth in August. The southern region outperformed other zones due to early Onam demand, while organic inquiries across India increased by 10 to 12 per cent. OEMs responded by ramping up factory dispatches to build inventory for the upcoming festival season. Retail sentiment remained strong as demand outpaced supply for EVs across OEMs and select premium internal combustion engine (ICE) models, such as TVS offerings including the Apache, select Jupiter variants, and the Ronin.

Meanwhile, the commercial vehicle segment exhibited steady trends, with medium and heavy commercial vehicles posting double-digit retail growth of 14 to 16 per cent YoY. This growth was driven by small fleet operators and vehicle replacement cycles. Regulatory mandates, including impending restrictions on BS4 commercial vehicles entering the National Capital Region starting November, served as an additional catalyst for replacement demand heading into the second half of the financial year.

"The recovery and growth in automobile retail demand highlight the resilience of domestic consumption heading into the festive season. The notable shift toward electric vehicles, CNG models, and SUVs indicates changing consumer preferences that manufacturers must adapt to efficiently. Furthermore, regulatory changes and replacement cycles in the commercial vehicle segment provide a steady foundation for industrial growth. Businesses and auto-ancillary startups must closely monitor these inventory trends and supply chain dynamics to align production with actual market demand." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
