From developing consumer apps to developing robust B2B commercial software products employing cutting-edge technology, Indian technologists have consistently provided additional comfort to users. While India has the world’s largest reservoir of technical talent, their work can now be seen all over the world, with nearly all of the major US technology corporations employing technology pioneers of Indian heritage. A chief technology officer (CTO) is the highest technology executive position within a company and leads the technology or engineering department. They develop policies and procedures and use technology to enhance products and services that focus on external customers.

Aruna Rao, chief technology officer (CTO), Kotak Mahindra Bank and group companies, believes that the banking sector has multiple technology options to choose from on both the payments and the lending sides. “On the payments side, new technologies such as near field connectivity, QR codes and biometrics are available for devices. Simultaneously, there are a whole set of new payment networks at the backend,” she says. In the lending space, Rao sees a lot of potential in terms of online credit decision-making that helps determine customers’ creditworthiness and arrive at faster and more accurate decisions on loan approvals, etc. However, there are several challenges involved in the adoption of new technologies in the banking sector, she adds. These include reskilling and upgrading workforce capabilities, governance issues given the accelerated rate of release of new technologies, and cybersecurity challenges.
