Mahindra & Mahindra reports rapid growth in its electric three-wheeler volumes, driven by favourable economics and localized routes. However, the company notes that electric light commercial vehicle adoption will likely proceed at a slower pace until charging infrastructure becomes robust enough to support route flexibility.

India’s commercial electric vehicle transition is progressing at varying speeds across different categories, according to insights shared by Mahindra & Mahindra. While the electrification of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) faces headwinds due to infrastructure limitations, the electric three-wheeler segment is scaling rapidly on the back of strong economic viability.

In the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, Mahindra held a 39.5 percent market share in the electric three-wheeler segment. The company reported an 85 percent year-on-year growth in e-3W volumes. Total Last Mile Mobility volumes for the firm rose to 42,276 units from 25,111 units a year earlier, with electric vehicle volumes increasing to 35,541 units from 19,254 units.

Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto and Farm Sector) at Mahindra & Mahindra, noted that the national penetration level of roughly 40 percent in electric three-wheelers conceals significantly higher adoption rates in early adopter markets, where penetration has reached 70 to 80 percent. Once commercial operators recognize the economic benefits of EVs and overcome initial concerns regarding reliability, the adoption curve tends to accelerate.

However, the operational dynamics differ notably for electric LCVs. Unlike three-wheelers, which generally travel along shorter, more localized routes, LCV operators require the flexibility to deploy vehicles wherever cargo demands take them. This makes widespread charging availability a critical factor for vehicle economics.

Jejurikar explained that LCV operators must be confident that their vehicles can complete assigned journeys and handle additional distances without losing operating time looking for charging stations. If charging access is limited, operators risk losing business opportunities, such as being forced to turn down a long-distance trip due to an inability to recharge along the way.

Because of these operational constraints, Mahindra expects electric LCV penetration to increase gradually in steps rather than matching the rapid pace seen in the three-wheeler category. Further expansion of public charging infrastructure is seen as a prerequisite for faster growth in the electric LCV sector.

Conversely, electric three-wheelers continue to benefit from clear payback periods and shorter operating routes that minimize range anxiety. Additional tailwinds for the e-3W segment include ease of driving—which broadens the potential driver pool, including women—and steady demand from e-commerce cargo applications. While competition in the segment is expected to intensify, Mahindra stated its intention to defend its leading volume position.
