The Kerala government has granted permission to the Kerala Civil Aviation Development Cooperative Society to launch flight services. Chief Minister V D Satheesan announced the initiative, stating it is the first time an airline will be operated by the cooperative sector in India.

The Kerala government has officially granted permission to the Kerala Civil Aviation Development Cooperative Society to launch commercial flight services. The announcement was made by Chief Minister V D Satheesan while speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Calicut City Service Cooperative Society on Sunday.

According to the Chief Minister, this marks the first time in India that the cooperative sector is entering the aviation industry. The project will be spearheaded by C N Vijayakrishnan, Chairman of the MVR Cancer Centre.

Highlighting the leadership behind the initiative, Satheesan noted that Vijayakrishnan has been granted permission to start the airline alongside major carriers like Air India and IndiGo. A team that previously contributed to the success of the MVR Cancer Centre and the Calicut City Service Cooperative Society will collaborate on the new aviation venture.

During his address, the Chief Minister also discussed broader economic measures involving the cooperative sector. He stated that the state government would provide a guarantee for deposits made by individuals in cooperative banks, ensuring that depositors receive assurances comparable to those offered by nationalised and scheduled banks.

Satheesan praised the Calicut City Service Cooperative Society for its involvement in charity and development activities, describing the wider cooperative movement as a vital pillar of both rural and urban economies in the state. He added that the expansion of cooperative societies into new development initiatives reflects ongoing economic progress.

In addition to developments in the cooperative sector, the Chief Minister touched upon state finances. He stated that the government had infused capital into the hands of ordinary citizens and the poor during the Onam season, which boosted market spending and economic activity. Furthermore, he claimed that the state recorded its highest-ever revenue collection last month since the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Concluding his remarks on the cooperative sector, Satheesan issued a warning against financial malpractice. He asserted that the government maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption in cooperative societies and stated that individuals who misappropriate public funds will face legal consequences.

"The entry of the cooperative sector into aviation is an unconventional move that broadens the scope of traditional business models in India. Guaranteeing deposits and expanding into capital-intensive industries like aviation will require strict financial governance and risk management. If executed carefully, this initiative could pave the way for cooperative models to explore large-scale infrastructure and transportation sectors, diversifying economic participation at the regional level." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
