CHENNAI — Lalithaa Jewellery Mart Ltd is preparing for a major retail expansion phase following its recent Initial Public Offer (IPO), according to Chairman and Managing Director M. Kiran Kumar. The company has announced plans to establish its presence in international markets alongside continued domestic growth.
Speaking at a media conference on Saturday, Kumar outlined the company's roadmap, which includes moving beyond domestic borders into Southeast Asia. Lalithaa Jewellery has committed to opening its first international showroom in Malaysia within the next two months, followed by a subsequent launch in Singapore.
On the domestic front, the company currently operates 64 showrooms. Kumar stated that Lalithaa Jewellery plans to increase this number to 110 showrooms across the southern states, maintaining its focus on Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
Once the south Indian network reaches a total of 175 showrooms, the company plans to initiate its expansion into North India. According to Kumar, the initial targets for the northern rollout will be Maharashtra, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
Reflecting on the company's financial journey and the recent IPO, Kumar noted that the successful listing has increased his responsibilities. He recalled starting the business by selling 48 grams of gold belonging to his mother, contrasted with the ₹80,000 crore recorded in Lalitha Jewellers' account for the IPO, pointing to it as an indicator of public trust.
Addressing concerns regarding high gold prices and consumer buying sentiment, Kumar maintained that historical long-term trends indicate gold consistently appreciates beyond its initial purchase price. He stated that buyers need not hesitate to purchase gold despite current price levels.
"Lalithaa Jewellery's transition from a domestic regional player to an international brand following a successful IPO highlights the growing maturity of traditional retail businesses in scaling operations. Expanding into overseas markets like Malaysia and Singapore while simultaneously building out a dense domestic network requires strict supply chain discipline and capital management. Founders scaling traditional retail enterprises must balance domestic market saturation with calculated international expansion to sustain long-term stakeholder confidence." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
