NEW DELHI: The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has extended the final date for submitting feedback on its proposed distribution reforms to October 31, 2026.
According to the regulatory body, the consultation process has seen an encouraging response from the sector, registering over 650 comments to date. The extension aims to facilitate wider participation and accommodate the significant interest shown by stakeholders and members of the public, granting them additional time to put forward their suggestions.
The regulatory review stems from a two-part consultation paper released by the IRDAI titled 'Recalibrating Economics of Insurance Distribution'. The paper proposes substantial changes to the existing regulatory framework, which notably includes introducing caps on commissions and the expenses of management.
The consultation paper outlines key structural adjustments aimed at altering how insurance products are distributed and managed financially. By inviting extensive feedback through this extended consultation window, the regulator intends to evaluate the implications of these proposed caps on commissions and management expenses before final implementation.
Stakeholders and interested members of the public wishing to participate are required to submit their comments in English and in full sentences, adhering to standard submission guidelines.
"The extension provided by the IRDAI highlights the complexity and scale of the proposed distribution reforms, particularly regarding caps on commissions and management expenses. For businesses operating in the insurance and InsurTech ecosystem, this extended timeline is a welcome move. It allows companies, founders, and industry stakeholders adequate time to thoroughly evaluate the financial and operational impact of these regulatory shifts and provide constructive feedback to shape a balanced ecosystem." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
