The Central government has approved an allocation of ₹988.75 crore for 39 road development projects across Keralam, according to a statement issued by state Public Works Minister P K Basheer on Saturday.
The funding has been sanctioned under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme. The approved works will cover a total length of 486.33 kilometres across the state. Construction on the projects is scheduled to begin in December.
Out of the total financial allocation, ₹570 crore has been specifically earmarked for road projects in the Malabar region located in northern Keralam. This covers 21 projects distributed across the districts of Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram.
The central approval follows discussions held with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. The scope of the approved works encompasses major district roads, ordinary district roads, and Corporation roads. The state government has already granted administrative sanction for these initiatives.
According to the state administration, further operational procedures, including necessary technical and financial clearances, will be completed within the stipulated timeframe to ensure that construction work commences as planned in December.
The infrastructure will be developed adhering to National Highway standards. State officials noted that the completion of these projects is expected to improve the quality of both rural and urban roads, thereby strengthening overall connectivity throughout Keralam.
"Robust infrastructure development is a fundamental requirement for regional economic growth and industrial expansion. The allocation of ₹989 crore under the CRIF scheme for road projects in Keralam will significantly improve logistical efficiency and connectivity between rural and urban commercial centres. For businesses and local enterprises, better transport networks translate to reduced transit times and lower operational costs. Ensuring that these projects meet National Highway standards and adhere to execution timelines will be crucial for maximizing their long-term economic impact." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
