Shruti Tripathi Chopra, editor-in-chief of Financial News and Private Equity News at Dow Jones, has become one of the first Indian-origin media professionals to ring the closing bell of the London Stock Exchange.

The historic ceremony took place during a Diwali celebration at the iconic bourse, marking the launch of the second edition of the 'South Asian Power Brokers' list. The annual publication by 'Financial News' is designed to spotlight influential leaders of South Asian heritage who are shaping finance and business on a global scale.

The gathering brought together industry figures to celebrate achievements and influence across financial services, investment, law, and business. Discussions during the event focused on the importance of representation, mentorship, and creating opportunities for future generations.

Speaking at the event, Chopra highlighted the broader significance of the milestone. “Ringing the closing bell at the London Stock Exchange matters because it sends a powerful message about who belongs at the very top of global finance,” she said.

“We are not just celebrating extraordinary achievement. We are changing what the next generation believes is possible,” Chopra added, noting that it was an honor to demonstrate that South Asian heritage is an asset to professional success.

Chopra also noted a striking detail regarding the leaders gathered on the balcony. “The South Asian leaders standing alongside me on the balcony of the London Stock Exchange collectively oversee billions of dollars. Yet when I asked how many had imagined, at the start of their careers, that they would one day stand on that balcony being celebrated for their professional success and South Asian heritage, not a single hand went up.”

London Stock Exchange chief executive Dame Julia Hoggett praised those who had made space for others, opened doors, and sent ladders down. Additionally, Krishna Omkar, the exchange's head of global sponsors and institutional investors, described the City of London’s South Asian community as a family rooted in shared values and mutual support.

"Representation at the highest levels of global finance and media plays a critical role in shaping entrepreneurial ambitions worldwide. When leaders of diverse backgrounds are visible at iconic institutions like the London Stock Exchange, it redefines the benchmark for the next generation of business professionals and founders. This milestone underscores the growing global influence of South Asian leaders across financial services, investment, and enterprise." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
