Chinese energy storage systems manufacturer Sigenergy plans to invest an initial $250 million in India to set up manufacturing facilities for inverters and battery energy storage systems, according to a senior company executive.
The company, which officially began operations in India earlier this year, will first construct an inverter manufacturing plant. According to Rahul Morde, head of sales for Sigenergy India, this initial facility is expected to become operational by the second quarter of 2027. Sigenergy is currently exploring various locations across the country to finalize the site for the factory.
Following the completion of the inverter plant, the company will subsequently establish a factory dedicated to battery energy storage systems. This second facility is slated to come online approximately six to eight months after the inverter facility becomes operational. In addition to manufacturing, Sigenergy plans to set up a research and development centre in India focused specifically on battery energy storage systems.
Addressing regulatory and compliance requirements, Morde stated that Sigenergy has successfully complied with India's data localization regulations regarding the storage of data within the country. The firm is currently in the process of seeking the necessary investment clearances to move forward with its manufacturing roadmap.
The expansion comes as India looks to rapidly scale up its renewable energy capacity and grid-scale energy storage infrastructure to support its national clean energy goals, thereby creating commercial opportunities for global and domestic manufacturers.
Sigenergy specializes in developing and manufacturing energy storage systems, which include battery products, inverters, and energy management software designed for residential and commercial customers. The firm recently debuted on the Hong Kong stock market in April, having raised HK$4.4 billion, equivalent to approximately $562 million, through an initial public offering.
"Sigenergy's initial $250 million investment highlights India's growing prominence as a strategic hub for clean energy manufacturing and grid-scale infrastructure. As the country rapidly expands its renewable energy capacity, localized manufacturing of inverters and battery storage systems will be critical to meeting long-term sustainability goals. For foreign entrants, aligning with data localization norms and securing regulatory clearances early on are essential steps to successfully scaling operations within the Indian market." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
