MUMBAI — HDFC Bank shares stabilised on Friday, trading marginally lower at ₹693.15, down just 0.13 per cent on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) by the afternoon. Buyers returned to slightly outnumber sellers for the first time in the week, bringing a relative calm following back-to-back sessions of sharp declines triggered by a media report regarding an internal leak investigation involving two senior executives.
The stock's near-term focus has shifted to Monday, October 27, when Anup Bagchi formally assumes the role of Chief Executive Officer. Bagchi, a veteran of the ICICI Group, succeeds Sashidhar Jagdishan, who is stepping down after six years at the helm. Bagchi takes charge amid an active internal probe, a leadership transition at the top, and a stock that has lost roughly 30 per cent year-to-date. Additionally, Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha is scheduled to exit by December, adding another variable to the bank's transition phase.
Friday marked exactly one year since HDFC Bank recorded its 52-week high of ₹1,020.50 on October 23, 2025. Trading at ₹693.15, the stock represents a decline of nearly 32 per cent from that peak, sitting close to its 52-week low of ₹681.90 touched on September 11, 2026. Buy orders accounted for 54.36 per cent of the total quantity traded on Friday, marking a reversal from Thursday's seller-dominated session, although trading volumes were lighter at 108.46 lakh shares. Consequently, the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio has compressed further to 13.36.
Meanwhile, Bank Nifty remained rangebound near 54,966, with resistance at 55,200 capping any meaningful recovery in the broader banking index. Market participants are closely watching whether Bagchi's arrival next week will provide a sentiment reset for the institution.
"Leadership transitions in large financial institutions are critical moments that demand absolute stability and clear communication to maintain market confidence. As HDFC Bank prepares for Anup Bagchi to take over as CEO amidst a challenging stock performance and internal investigations, the immediate priority for incoming leadership must be restoring transparency and steadying investor sentiment. Markets react strongly to uncertainty, and navigating this structural change effectively will set the tone for the bank's performance in the coming quarters." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
