MUMBAI — Godrej Industries Group (GIG) announced on Tuesday its entry into the private credit space, targeting to raise up to ₹2,000 crore in a maiden alternate investment fund (AIF).
The announcement follows the recent transition of Pirojsha Godrej, representing the next generation of the business family, taking over the mantle as the chairperson of the grouping. Under this new initiative, Godrej Asset Management Company (AMC) will raise the funds through a category-II AIF.
The newly formed AIF will operate as a sector-agnostic platform aimed at established private mid-market companies using a performing credit strategy. According to an official statement, the financing will be supported by hard collateral and comprehensive covenant protection.
The fund has set a minimum fundraising target of ₹1,000 crore, with an overall target corpus of ₹2,000 crore, alongside a greenshoe option. The capital will be sourced from eligible investors, which include high-net-worth individuals (HNIs), ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNIs), family offices, and institutional investors.
Prior to this development, GIG established a presence in the lending and wealth management sector through its subsidiary, Godrej Capital. The private credit market in India, which typically involves higher-interest lending to entities unable to secure traditional bank or non-bank financing due to unique circumstances, has experienced growth over recent years.
Manish Shah, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Godrej Capital and Non-Executive Director of Godrej AMC, described the entry into private credit as a natural extension for the business. He noted that the company intends to further build its capabilities within the asset management sector.
"Many well-run mid-sized businesses need capital that offers greater flexibility than conventional financing, without requiring them to dilute equity. We see an opportunity to address that need by combining our understanding of Indian businesses with disciplined capital," Shah stated.
Pavan Manchala, the chief investment officer for private credit, emphasized that enduring outcomes depend on identifying resilient businesses, structuring capital thoughtfully, and maintaining underwriting discipline. The business will focus on capital preservation and seek to deliver attractive risk-adjusted returns, the statement added.
"The entry of established conglomerates like the Godrej Industries Group into the private credit space highlights the maturing alternative financing ecosystem in India. As traditional banking channels sometimes fall short for mid-market companies requiring flexible capital without equity dilution, well-structured Category-II AIFs backed by disciplined underwriting and hard collateral provide a viable alternative. This strategic expansion reflects a broader trend of institutional and high-net-worth capital moving toward niche debt strategies that offer attractive risk-adjusted returns." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
