Chinese artificial intelligence pioneer DeepSeek has secured approximately $15 billion in a major fundraising round, backed by major companies including Tencent and CATL. The capital injection comes as the Hangzhou-based startup scales its infrastructure and prepares for a potential public market debut.

Chinese artificial intelligence pioneer DeepSeek has raised about 100 billion yuan, equivalent to approximately $15 billion, in its latest fundraising round. The round stands as one of the largest in China, highlighting the Hangzhou-based firm's ambition to compete globally with leading US artificial intelligence laboratories such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

According to individuals familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the firm increased its financing target multiple times during discussions with investors. The target moved from an initial 50 billion yuan to 80 billion yuan before reaching the final total.

Battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) and WeChat operator Tencent Holdings Ltd. were among the primary investors participating in the round. Representatives for DeepSeek, Tencent, and CATL did not respond to emailed requests for comment regarding the transaction.

This substantial capital raise sets the foundation for what is expected to be a prominent market debut in China. Previously, DeepSeek impacted global markets in 2025 by demonstrating the capacity to build models competitive with Silicon Valley leaders at a fraction of the cost, despite operating with significantly fewer financial resources than US competitors.

While this funding narrows the gap, DeepSeek still maintains lower financial reserves compared to OpenAI and Anthropic, which have each raised over $100 billion. Alongside industry peer Moonshot, DeepSeek is currently preparing for an initial public offering.

With the newly secured capital, DeepSeek has begun increasing expenditures to expand its AI data center infrastructure and develop additional open-source models intended for domestic and international markets. The company has a history of introducing high-performance, lower-cost models that apply competitive pressure across the sector. For instance, the September release of the V4.1 Flash model contributed to share price declines for domestic rivals MiniMax Group Inc. and Z.AI Co.

The broader Chinese technology ecosystem has seen similar movements toward accessible artificial intelligence services. Firms ranging from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. to ByteDance Ltd. have rolled out low-cost, open-source AI services that allow customers to modify systems to their requirements. Market analyses, including benchmarks from Artificial Analysis, have highlighted the intense pricing and performance pressures introduced by these developments within the broader artificial intelligence landscape.

"DeepSeek securing a $15 billion funding round marks a significant shift in the global artificial intelligence landscape, narrowing the financial gap between Chinese developers and US frontrunners. By scaling infrastructure and preparing for an initial public offering, the company is demonstrating how capital is concentrating around proven low-cost, high-performance AI models. For founders and investors, this highlights the intense competition and margin pressures currently shaping the sector, where cost efficiency and open-source accessibility are redefining market standards." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
