British banking major Barclays Plc has announced a restructuring plan that includes cutting 5,000 jobs globally. According to a presentation released by the bank, the workforce reduction accounts for approximately 5% of its total employees.
At the end of 2025, Barclays employed a global workforce of roughly 93,000 people. The London-headquartered institution stated that the job cuts are part of an ongoing initiative to "structurally reduce" costs and generate financial capacity for future investments.
The bank highlighted that its cost-reduction drive is heavily focused on simplifying its organizational structure. Furthermore, Barclays noted that artificial intelligence is beginning to play a role in creating operational efficiency across its business operations.
"The decision by Barclays to cut 5% of its workforce highlights a broader global shift in how large enterprises approach operational scaling. By leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline processes, companies are increasingly looking to optimize cost structures and redirect capital toward core investments. For the broader business ecosystem, this underscores how automation is moving from an experimental phase into a primary driver of organizational efficiency." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
