Gurugram-based venture Isthmus 44 officially launched its operations on August 25, 2026, positioning itself as India's first curatorial house dedicated to sourcing and presenting single-cask Scotch whisky to collectors in the country.
The company's debut product, designated as Chapter I, is a nine-year-old single malt sourced from The GlenAllachie Distillery in Speyside. Distilled in October 2016 and bottled in January 2026 at 46.2 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), the whisky was matured in an ex-Oloroso sherry hogshead. The inaugural offering consists of a limited run of 343 numbered bottles, priced at an MRP of ₹12,000. According to the company, the release is presented without chill filtration or added artificial coloring.
The market entry of Isthmus 44 coincides with regulatory adjustments in India's Scotch import sector. The India-UK Free Trade Agreement has reduced the existing 150 percent tariff on Scotch whisky by half to 75 percent, with additional reductions planned for future years. This policy shift is anticipated to enhance market access for independent and premium Scotch producers aiming to reach Indian consumers.
The business model employed by Isthmus 44 follows the independent bottler tradition commonly found in the United Kingdom. In this approach, individual casks are chosen based on their provenance, maturation character, and sensory evaluation, rather than undergoing blending for standard commercial production. Each selected cask yields a restricted number of bottles that cannot be reproduced once depleted.
Founder Sachin Uppal presented the initial release at an event held at Oak & Cru, The Quorum, in Gurugram, attended by collectors, industry veterans, and trade professionals. The company stated that all casks it sources are evaluated by an expert panel and bottled in Scotland in compliance with Scotch Whisky Association regulations before being imported into India as numbered editions.
Buyers of Chapter I bottles are automatically enrolled in 'The Circle', a registration system that provides early access to information regarding upcoming releases and tasting panel notes. Isthmus 44 announced that its distribution strategy will focus on selective retail and on-trade channels, prioritizing controlled presentation over high-volume market penetration.
"The launch of Isthmus 44 highlights how changing macroeconomic policies, such as the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, can directly open up niche business segments in India. By focusing on a curated, limited-edition model similar to established UK traditions, the venture is targeting a specific segment of collectors. For new startups operating in imported goods, aligning market entry with tariff reforms while maintaining selective distribution is an interesting approach to building early brand value." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
