Multinational drugmaker AstraZeneca Pharma India is officially moving its registered office from Karnataka to Maharashtra, marking a significant operational shift for the company. The relocation follows shareholder approval granted in May, which was formally communicated to the stock exchanges at the time.
As part of this transition, the company recently unveiled its new corporate office in Mumbai, which was inaugurated by the Maharashtra Chief Minister. According to AstraZeneca, the relocation of its corporate office and employees represents the next phase of growth aimed at expanding access to innovation and deepening partnerships within the healthcare sector.
A company spokesperson explained that the proximity to key healthcare institutions, partners, policy frameworks, and financial ecosystems in Maharashtra will help the firm address pressing healthcare needs in the country. The new corporate facility spans 25,600 square feet and accommodates nearly 300 employees working across medical affairs, strategy, marketing, business management, human resources, and corporate affairs.
Despite the corporate office move, the company clarified that its commercial sales organization continues to be spread across the country. Furthermore, Bengaluru remains an important hub and a strategic footprint for AstraZeneca, continuing to support key global operations.
The shift follows earlier operational changes by the drugmaker. Last September, AstraZeneca surrendered its manufacturing licence two years ahead of the expiry date, marking the exit from its only plant in India. The company stated that the closure of the Bengaluru manufacturing facility in 2023 was part of a strategic review of its global manufacturing and supply network, adding that manufacturing activities have been successfully transitioned while maintaining the steady supply of medicines to patients.
AstraZeneca has introduced over 25 new medicines and indications in India over the past three years. The firm is currently running approximately 80 global clinical trials in the country to support new treatments and strengthen India's contribution to global research.
Praveen Rao Akkinepally, Country President and Managing Director of AstraZeneca Pharma India Limited, noted that a stronger Mumbai presence enhances the company's ability to collaborate with healthcare ecosystem partners and advance solutions for local patients. The organization maintains a workforce of approximately 5,000 employees across India.
The strategic relocation is also expected to create opportunities for partnerships in core segments where AstraZeneca maintains a presence, including oncology, biopharmaceuticals, and rare diseases. Additionally, the company stated that the move supports its continued investment in talent and capability building, reinforcing India as a diverse global footprint supporting commercial operations, site management, technology, research and development, and global business services.
"Corporate relocations of this scale are typically driven by the need for closer proximity to key financial and policy stakeholders. For a major pharmaceutical player like AstraZeneca, shifting its registered office to Mumbai places it directly within a key financial and commercial hub, which can streamline strategic partnerships and institutional engagement. At the same time, maintaining operational footprints like Bengaluru demonstrates the value of balancing regional strengths to support complex global and domestic business requirements." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
