CHENNAI — In a strategic diversification of its indigenous manufacturing capabilities, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has successfully developed Freight Electric Multiple Unit (Freight EMU) trainsets. Traditionally known for pioneering passenger rail solutions such as the Vande Bharat series, this technological pivot marks a monumental shift for the production giant, extending its manufacturing expertise into high-speed, efficient cargo and freight logistics.
Addressing stakeholders during an Independence Day address, ICF General Manager Manish Agarwal highlighted that the newly developed Freight EMU has already garnered substantial interest across the logistics and transportation sectors. Industry experts anticipate that this innovation will revolutionize the movement of white goods and high-priority cargo across India's vast rail network, offering a faster, containerized, and reliable alternative to traditional freight carriers.
Beyond freight diversification, ICF is aggressively scaling up its passenger portfolio. Agarwal revealed that comprehensive production drawings—spanning structural and fabrication assemblies, coach-to-coach interfaces, and underframe equipment layouts—have been finalized for the much-anticipated indigenous 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset. Commercial production of these state-of-the-art sleeper units is slated to commence shortly, promising to redefine overnight long-distance travel in India.
Furthermore, the factory is advancing development on the Amrit Bharat Version 3.0 trainset. Designed to cater to a diverse demographic, this next-generation offering will integrate air-conditioned, general, and sleeper-class coaches into a unified rake, delivering economical yet comfortable travel options for masses across various economic sections. In the urban transit segment, ICF has rolled out India’s first 15-car EMU rake tailored for Mumbai’s demanding suburban network. To bolster commuter safety, the factory has also engineered non-AC EMU coaches equipped with modern automatic sliding doors.
Enhancements are not limited to newly manufactured rakes; ICF is also upgrading existing fleets. The factory recently overhauled the interior aesthetics of Kolkata Metro coaches, incorporating advanced aluminium paneling, sleek ceilings, and single-piece sidewall panels to elevate passenger experience while embedding cutting-edge safety features.
This robust diversification and product pipeline coincide with a phenomenal growth phase in ICF’s manufacturing output. During the 2025-26 fiscal period, the factory achieved a record-shattering outturn of 3,405 coaches, translating to an impressive 13 percent year-on-year increase. The milestone-rich year also saw the rollout of ICF’s historic 80,000th passenger coach, cementing its legacy as a cornerstone of India’s heavy engineering and railway manufacturing prowess.
