NEW DELHI — Leaders of the INDIA opposition bloc gathered in New Delhi on Sunday to stage a protest march and rally, scaling up their agitation against alleged electoral irregularities and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protest, themed 'Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao', began with leaders assembling at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's residence. Participants included Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress leaders Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, and other opposition figures from various parties.
From Kharge's residence, the leaders proceeded in open vehicles to the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction. Accompanied by supporters, party workers, and representatives from youth and student organisations, the procession moved slowly towards Ramlila Maidan.
Supporters carried banners, flags, and placards raising slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Kumar and the Modi government regarding the issue of vote deletion. Crowds continued to swell at the Ramlila Maidan venue as supporters arrived from various states after traveling to the national capital over the weekend.
The demonstration follows a symbolic public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Kumar held a day prior at the lawns of 10, Rajaji Marg. During the meeting, opposition MPs, leaders, and civil society members passed a resolution accusing Kumar of electoral manipulation and demanding his resignation and trial.
"Large-scale political demonstrations and prolonged public agitations create immediate disruptions in urban commercial hubs, particularly in metropolitan centers like New Delhi. While political developments of this scale capture national attention, businesses operating in the capital region must factor in logistical delays, localized traffic diversions, and temporary security measures that can impact daily operations and retail footfall." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
