The average daily value of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions crossed the ₹1 lakh crore mark in a single month for the first time in October 2026, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
During October 2026, UPI logged its highest average daily value at ₹1,00,871.30 crore, compared to ₹97,913.22 crore in September 2026. The average daily volume of transactions also increased to 821.69 million in October 2026, up from 802.28 million in the previous month.
Overall monthly figures for October 2026 stood at 25.47 billion in volume and ₹31.52 lakh crore in value, marking an increase from September 2026, which recorded a volume of 24.07 billion and a total value of ₹29.37 lakh crore.
UPI is an instant payment system developed by the NPCI, an entity regulated by the Reserve Bank of India. Built over the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) infrastructure, the system enables instant fund transfers between bank accounts.
Commenting on the growth, Anand Kumar Bajaj, Founder, MD and CEO of PayNearby, stated that UPI's continued momentum reflects the integration of digital payments into everyday life. He noted that the festive season contributed to growing familiarity and confidence among users, making financial interactions simpler and more accessible across various sections of society.
Bajaj further emphasized that as digital adoption deepens, the focus must shift towards making these services inclusive, trusted, and accessible at the last mile. He highlighted the role of neighbourhood retailers in assisting customers with digital payments, particularly in communities where assisted access remains essential.
"Crossing the ₹1 lakh crore average daily transaction milestone is a clear indicator of how deeply digital payments are embedded in India's economy. This growth highlights the scalability of the NPCI infrastructure and the increasing trust consumers place in digital transactions, particularly during high-demand periods like the festive season. Moving forward, the focus for businesses and fintech players must remain on last-mile accessibility and security to sustain this momentum across diverse demographics." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
