Indian equity benchmarks traded higher during Thursday's morning session, with the Nifty 50 breaking past the critical 22,800 resistance level. The recovery was supported by broad-based buying in infrastructure, banking, and energy stocks, despite cautious early trends and macroeconomic headwinds.

Indian equity benchmarks gained ground during the morning session on Thursday, pushing past a key market resistance level. As of 12:43 pm, the Nifty 50 traded at 22,838.35, up 139.50 points or 0.61 per cent, while the Sensex stood at 73,783.04, gaining 537.01 points or 0.73 per cent. The indices broke past the 22,800 resistance level flagged by analysts at the open, driven by broad-based buying across infrastructure, banking, and energy stocks.

The session began on a cautious note. The Nifty opened near 22,691, marginally below its previous close of 22,698.85. The initial weakness was weighed down by a weak Gift Nifty signal and lingering uncertainty surrounding the US Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy moves. The US central bank previously held rates at 3.75 per cent to 4.00 per cent in a 10-2 vote, with Governor Cook and Cleveland Fed President Hammack dissenting in favour of a quarter-point hike, keeping a December increase firmly in play.

Among individual movers, Adani Ports led the Nifty 50 gainers, surging 5.26 per cent to ₹1,854 on heavy volumes of 48.36 lakh shares worth ₹88,048.69 lakhs. Adani Enterprises followed with a gain of 4.61 per cent, trading at ₹2,594. Power Grid rose 3.96 per cent to ₹261.35, while Kotak Mahindra Bank advanced 3.38 per cent to ₹454.85 on trades exceeding 2.04 crore shares worth ₹92,433.12 lakhs, reflecting renewed appetite for private sector banking stocks. Eternal gained 3.04 per cent to ₹335.90.

On the losing side, Trent fell 2.40 per cent to ₹2,844 ahead of its quarterly earnings due later in the session. Bajaj Auto declined 1.96 per cent to ₹10,279, and SBI Life Insurance shed 1.22 per cent to ₹1,646.30. Asian Paints, also scheduled to report earnings, slipped 1.19 per cent to ₹2,257.40, alongside Maruti Suzuki, which fell 1.19 per cent to ₹11,441.

Market breadth on the BSE remained positive, with 2,283 stocks advancing against 1,838 declining and 241 remaining unchanged out of 4,362 stocks traded. However, market participation showed signs of concentration in large-cap names, as 129 stocks hit fresh 52-week lows compared to 79 reaching 52-week highs. Additionally, 168 stocks were locked in lower circuits against 158 in upper circuits.

External factors continued to act as key macroeconomic overhangs, with WTI crude trading near $101.43 a barrel and the rupee holding around 95.21 against the dollar. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that the rupee’s weakness near 95.25 against the dollar adds to pressure on domestic sentiment, while firm US yields and a resilient dollar reinforce external headwinds. Additional quarterly results from Coal India, InterGlobe Aviation, Laurus Labs, and Ambuja Cements are slated for release, which may drive further stock-specific movements through the remainder of the session.

"The midday surge past the 22,800 resistance level demonstrates underlying resilience in key sectors like banking, energy, and infrastructure. However, the divergence in market breadth—where a higher number of stocks touched 52-week lows and lower circuits—indicates that the ongoing recovery remains heavily concentrated among large-cap entities. Investors must continue to monitor macroeconomic headwinds, including crude oil prices and currency fluctuations, alongside corporate earnings as the session progresses." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
