The cooperative sector in Kerala is expanding into the aviation industry, following a recent greenlight from the state government to launch flight services. State Cooperation Minister M. Liju highlighted this development as a reflection of the diversification and growth of the state's cooperative movement into new fields.
Speaking at the inauguration of the first general body meeting of the Keralam Civil Aviation Development Cooperative Society Ltd on Wednesday, Minister Liju stated that the government is actively encouraging cooperative institutions and private entrepreneurs to help accelerate regional development. During the event, the minister handed over the society's registration certificate, bylaws, and category statement to its chief promoter, C.N. Vijayakrishnan.
According to state officials, this initiative stems from the public-cooperative enterprise model proposed in the state government's budget. The newly formed society aims to launch the country's first flight services operated by the cooperative sector.
Highlighting the scale of the state's cooperative economy, Minister Liju noted that the cooperative sector in Kerala currently conducts business worth more than Rs 6.5 lakh crore. He added that the sector holds considerable potential to contribute further to economic development and that the government will extend support to restore public confidence in cooperative institutions.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan had earlier announced the government's permission for the society to initiate flight services while speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Calicut City Service Cooperative Society in Kozhikode.
"The entry of the cooperative sector into aviation is an unconventional move that demonstrates how traditional institutional models can diversify into capital-intensive industries. With the Kerala cooperative sector handling business worth over Rs 6.5 lakh crore, leveraging this existing financial base for public-cooperative enterprises creates a new pathway for regional infrastructure development. However, operating in the aviation sector requires stringent regulatory compliance and robust risk management. For long-term viability, such ventures must balance public welfare objectives with strict commercial discipline and operational efficiency." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
