Technology major Microsoft has reported a 19 per cent year-on-year increase in revenue, reaching $92.3 billion for the July-September quarter. The financial results mark the beginning of fiscal year 2027 for the company, showing higher income and earnings compared to the $77.7 billion reported in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
During the quarter ended September 30, 2026, the company's operating income increased by 21 per cent to $45.9 billion. Net income saw a 32 per cent rise on a reported basis, reaching $36.6 billion.
The company's cloud division played a major role in the financial performance. Microsoft Cloud revenue grew by 30 per cent year-on-year, or 31 per cent in constant currency, to reach $63.9 billion. Azure revenue specifically grew by 48 per cent during the period.
CEO Satya Nadella noted the performance on social media, stating that the fiscal year had started at a fast pace with cloud growth accelerating. Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood added that the results exceeded expectations across revenue, operating income, and earnings per share.
Revenue from Microsoft's Agents and Infra segment rose 25 per cent to $76.8 billion. Furthermore, the company's commercial remaining performance obligation, which represents contracted revenue that is yet to be recognised, grew by 73 per cent to $677 billion.
Diluted earnings per share rose 32 per cent to $4.92 on a reported basis. When excluding the impact of investments in OpenAI, adjusted net income increased 18 per cent to $36.4 billion, while adjusted earnings per share rose 18 per cent to $4.89.
Despite the strong overall performance, the company's Devices and Consumer segment experienced a 3 per cent decline in revenue down to $15.5 billion. Within this segment, Windows OEM and devices revenue fell by 22 per cent, and Xbox content and services revenue dropped by 2 per cent. However, search and advertising revenue, excluding traffic acquisition costs, increased by 12 per cent.
Looking ahead, Microsoft expects revenue for the December quarter to be between $96 billion and $97.1 billion, representing an expected growth of 18 to 19 per cent. Azure revenue growth is projected at 49 to 50 per cent in constant currency. Hood noted that customer demand continues to exceed available supply, while infrastructure efficiency improvements are being made to handle higher demand.
Capital expenditure for the September quarter stood at $45.2 billion. The company anticipates spending to exceed $50 billion in the December quarter, with total capital expenditure for calendar year 2026 projected at approximately $170 billion, which partially reflects capacity deliveries delayed from earlier periods.
"Microsoft's latest financial performance highlights the immense scalability and profitability of enterprise cloud infrastructure. With cloud revenue accelerating to 30 per cent and robust commercial remaining performance obligations, the results demonstrate sustained enterprise demand for advanced computing and AI-related services. For the broader tech and startup ecosystem, these figures underscore how foundational infrastructure investments continue to drive market leadership and long-term enterprise value, even as consumer segments face minor headwinds." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
