The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned the direct recruitment of 8,000 Field Assistants for the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL). The hiring will occur in phases across 2027 and 2028, with a total annual financial commitment estimated at ₹341.26 crore once fully implemented.

The Tamil Nadu government has approved a major recruitment drive to fill 8,000 Field Assistant positions in the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL). The hiring will be conducted via direct recruitment through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC).

According to a Government Order issued by the Energy Department on October 28, the recruitment process will take place in a phased manner over a two-year period. A total of 5,000 posts will be filled during the calendar year 2027, followed by an additional 3,000 posts in 2028. The decision follows a formal proposal submitted by the Chairman and Managing Director of TNPDCL.

The state government has also approved the financial breakdown associated with the expansion. Once all 8,000 positions are filled, the total financial commitment is expected to reach approximately ₹341.26 crore per year.

For the initial batch of 5,000 personnel scheduled for induction in 2027, the annual financial commitment is estimated at ₹213.28 crore, translating to ₹17.77 crore per month. The subsequent induction of 3,000 personnel in 2028 will add an annual expenditure of ₹127.97 crore, or ₹10.66 crore per month.

The posts carry a basic pay scale ranging from ₹18,800 to ₹59,900. The order, signed by Principal Secretary to Government Anil Meshram, outlines that the total expenditure per person will amount to ₹35,548 per month. This figure includes the basic pay along with Dearness Allowance at 60 percent, House Rent Allowance, City Compensatory Allowance, medical allowance, and the employer's contribution towards the Contributory Pension Scheme.

"Large-scale public sector recruitments like this one for TNPDCL require meticulous long-term financial planning, as demonstrated by the phased hiring model spanning across 2027 and 2028. Managing an annual financial commitment of over ₹341 crore for operational workforce expansion highlights the importance of structured budgeting in state-run utilities to maintain service delivery without placing sudden strain on fiscal resources." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
