Indian equity markets closed lower for the fourth straight session on Friday, driven by rising crude prices near six-month highs and escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Broader markets bore the brunt of the sell-off, with smallcap and midcap indices recording sharp losses while sectoral indices finished entirely in the red.

Indian benchmark indices extended their losing streak to a fourth consecutive session on Friday, pressured by Brent crude hovering near a six-month high and escalating tensions in the Middle East. The selling pressure extended far beyond headline indices, heavily impacting the broader market segment.

The Nifty 50 ended down 0.39 per cent at 22,600, after touching an intraday low of 22,372 before buyers stepped in at lower levels. The BSE Sensex fell 125.56 points, or 0.17 per cent, to close at 73,123.83, swinging between an intraday high of 73,766 and a low of 72,452. On a weekly basis, the Sensex registered a decline of 2.15 per cent.

The impact across the broader market was wide and deep, with all sectoral indices ending in negative territory. Metal, Realty, and PSU Banks emerged among the worst performers. Realty stocks fell up to 5 per cent, with Godrej Properties declining over 4.4 per cent following its quarterly results. IT stocks proved comparatively resilient. The Nifty Midcap 100 dropped 2.21 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 lost 2.94 per cent, with 460 of the 500 most-tracked stocks closing in the red. Bank Nifty closed near 54,300, down 638 points after a volatile intraday swing of more than 1,000 points. Eternal and Apollo Hospitals were among the limited Nifty gainers, whereas Shriram Finance and Adani Enterprises marked notable laggards.

Market analysts pointed to macro factors driving the downturn. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, noted that valuation concerns, the unwinding of leveraged positions, surging crude prices, and weak global cues intensified pressure on mid- and small-caps. With Brent crude approaching $115 a barrel, imported inflation and corporate margin pressures remained a prominent macro overhang. Ajit Mishra, SVP-Research at Religare Broking, added that continued foreign fund outflows and uncertainty across global markets further dampened risk appetite.

Global cues provided little stability, as Asian markets drifted without clear direction following an overnight decline on Wall Street driven by selling in technology and AI stocks. Currency and commodity markets also reflected the stress. The Indian rupee weakened for the second straight session amid higher crude prices and a stronger US dollar. Dilip Parmar, Senior Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, noted that spot USDINR is capped near 95.30 with initial support at 4.70, while the Dollar Index hovered around 101.70.

Gold prices experienced a difficult week, sliding over 3.5 per cent to around ₹1,42,800 as COMEX Gold corrected toward $4,000. Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst at LKP Securities, attributed the bullion's decline to higher rate expectations and elevated bond yields. Meanwhile, the India VIX rose to 16.80, pointing to heightened near-term uncertainty.

Looking ahead, market participants are closely monitoring the upcoming US Federal Reserve policy decision, which is expected to guide the near-term direction of currencies and commodities. For the Nifty, analysts suggest that if the previous week's low of 22,372 holds, the index may consolidate in the 22,370–22,850 range, though a sustained break below this level could introduce further downside toward 22,180.

"The recent market correction underscores how macroeconomic vulnerabilities, particularly surging crude oil prices and foreign fund outflows, directly impact domestic equities, with smaller companies bearing the heaviest impact. For entrepreneurs and business leaders, this environment highlights the importance of maintaining strong cash reserves, managing leverage carefully, and focusing on operational efficiency as funding conditions and investor risk appetite face heightened near-term pressure." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
