Karnataka Bank has introduced the Capital Gains Account Scheme to help taxpayers deposit unutilized capital gains and claim eligible tax benefits. The scheme provides both savings and term deposit options to support taxpayers with their reinvestment planning.

Karnataka Bank has officially launched the Capital Gains Account Scheme, offering customers a banking solution to deposit unutilized capital gains while they plan eligible reinvestments under the provisions of the Income Tax Act.

The scheme is structured for taxpayers who have earned capital gains from the transfer of eligible capital assets but cannot complete the prescribed reinvestment within the stipulated time frame. By depositing the eligible capital gains amount into a Capital Gains Account Scheme account within the prescribed period, customers can secure applicable tax benefits, subject to compliance with relevant provisions of the Income Tax Act and associated regulations.

According to a media statement, Karnataka Bank is among the authorized banks permitted to offer this scheme. The government's decision to expand the availability of the scheme through additional banking partners aims to improve accessibility and convenience for taxpayers across the country who want to manage their capital gains efficiently through authorized channels.

Under the newly launched scheme, customers have access to two primary account structures. They can open Capital Gains Account-A, which is a savings deposit account designed for flexible deposits and withdrawals. Alternatively, they can opt for Capital Gains Account-B, which functions as a term deposit account intended for the longer-term parking of funds.

The bank stated that the scheme serves as an effective solution for customers who are planning eligible reinvestments. These include the purchase or construction of residential property and other qualifying investments as permitted under the applicable provisions of the Income Tax Act.

Commenting on the launch, Raghavendra S Bhat, Managing Director and CEO of Karnataka Bank, said in the statement: “At Karnataka Bank, we are committed to delivering customer-centric banking solutions that empower customers to manage their finances with confidence. The launch of the CGAS reflects our continued focus on providing convenient and compliant solutions that support effective tax planning and investment decisions.”

"The launch of the Capital Gains Account Scheme by Karnataka Bank provides taxpayers with a secure, authorized channel to manage their unutilized capital gains while adhering to Income Tax Act regulations. Offering both flexible savings and term deposit options allows individuals and businesses to better align their fund parking with long-term reinvestment timelines, such as property acquisition. For the banking sector, participating in such government-backed schemes broadens customer engagement and strengthens compliance-driven financial services." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
