Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced plans to establish a committee comprising representatives from all 36 communities in the state. The initiative follows an inquiry by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding community representation and aims to foster peace and inclusive development.

IMPHAL — The Government of Manipur has announced plans to form a committee representing all 36 communities in the state to promote peace, harmony, and inclusive development in the region.

The announcement was made by Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday. According to the Chief Minister, the proposal came after a query from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the existence of such a committee to bring all communities together.

Khemchand Singh shared the development while speaking at an event held at the Chief Minister's Secretariat in Imphal to felicitate hill chiefs from various tribes. The gathering followed the inauguration of the Hill (Tribal) Chiefs' Guest House at Palace Compound, which took place as part of the Mera Hou Chongba Festival 2026.

During his address, the Chief Minister noted that all communities have played a role in defending and safeguarding Manipur. He recalled historical events, including the Anglo-Manipur War and the Seven Years' Devastation, paying tribute to the sacrifices made to protect the state's land, identity, and heritage.

Expressing optimism about the upcoming initiatives, Khemchand Singh stated that festivals such as Mera Hou Chongba help strengthen the spirit of brotherhood and expressed happiness that individuals from hill areas—some of whom were previously reluctant to visit Imphal—participated in this year's celebrations.

He also remarked that the newly inaugurated guest house serves as a symbol of unity and brotherhood between the hill regions and the valley.

"Inclusive growth and economic stability for any region rely fundamentally on social harmony and active stakeholder participation. The initiative by the Manipur government to establish a unified committee representing all 36 communities is a constructive step toward building long-term regional stability. For businesses, investors, and entrepreneurs looking at emerging regions, a secure and collaborative environment remains a critical baseline for sustainable economic development and long-term investment planning." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
