The Centre has successfully created 11 crore unique 11-digit farmer IDs, known as Kisan Pehchaan Patra, under the AgriStack framework. According to the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the milestone has been completed under the Digital Agriculture Mission, ahead of the scheduled March 2027 deadline.
The Farmer ID initiative is structured to provide agricultural workers with a unique digital identity. The Ministry stated that this system is designed to enable transparent, efficient, and timely access to government schemes, bank credit, crop insurance, and disaster relief, while simultaneously reducing the need for repeated verification and paperwork.
Registration numbers saw a rapid acceleration over recent years. Official sources note that registrations grew from approximately 30 lakh farmer IDs in December 2024 to 7.8 crore by December 2025.
Data from the Farmer Registry highlights the demographic distribution of Indian agriculture. Women account for 26 per cent of the registered farmers, while about 81 per cent belong to the marginal and small operational-holding categories, defined as holding less than 5 hectares. In terms of age distribution, approximately 15 per cent of registered farmers are over 70 years old, and 7.5 per cent are under the age of 30. The remaining 77.5 per cent fall into the 30 to 70 age group.
Additionally, the registry includes specialized categories of cultivators. Officials reported that nearly 29,000 tenants and sharecroppers have been issued farmer IDs across Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Assam, utilizing state-specific identification mechanisms. Furthermore, 3.14 lakh Forest Rights holders have received IDs in Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Tripura.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated in a video message that the completion of the 11 crore Farmer IDs ahead of schedule will remove the necessity for farmers to repeatedly submit physical paperwork and endless documentation. According to the minister, the digital ID will serve as the primary document required for farmers to access bank loans, crop insurance, disaster relief, and to sell produce to government agencies offering Minimum Support Prices (MSPs).
The Ministry reiterated that the initiative aims to enhance transparency and accountability in agricultural service delivery, minimizing procedural hurdles for eligible beneficiaries. Official data indicates that more than 6 crore farmers have already accessed benefits since the initiative was launched in 2024.
"The rapid rollout of 11 crore digital farmer IDs under the AgriStack framework marks a notable step toward streamlining agricultural service delivery in India. By reducing administrative friction and paperwork, this digital infrastructure has the potential to lower operational hurdles for farmers accessing institutional credit, crop insurance, and government schemes. From a business and technology perspective, large-scale digital identity adoption in the agrarian sector opens up new avenues for agritech enterprises, financial institutions, and supply chain innovators to engage more efficiently with rural markets." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
