Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd reported a 22.5 percent decline in standalone net profit for the second quarter of fiscal 2027, driven down by a prolonged retail price freeze despite rising operational costs. Revenue from operations climbed during the quarter, even as EBITDA and margins faced pressure from inventory and foreign exchange losses.

State-owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) reported a 22.5 per cent fall in its September quarter net profit, as earnings from operations weakened due to a retail price freeze despite rising input costs.

BPCL's standalone net profit declined to ₹4,993 crore in July-September, marking the second quarter of fiscal 2027, compared to ₹6,443 crore in the corresponding period a year earlier. Meanwhile, revenue from operations rose to ₹1.58 lakh crore from ₹1.22 lakh crore. Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) fell nearly 14 per cent to ₹9,437 crore from ₹10,968 crore.

India's second-largest fuel retailer earned $32.53 on turning every barrel of crude oil into fuels like petrol and diesel during the quarter, showing an improvement from the $10.78 a barrel gross refining margin recorded a year earlier. However, these refining gains were offset by losses stemming from a five-month-old freeze in retail price revisions alongside rising costs. Additionally, BPCL booked a ₹330 crore marketing inventory loss and a ₹397 crore loss due to forex fluctuations.

On a consolidated basis, net profit dropped 21.5 per cent to ₹4,863 crore from ₹6,191 crore, while revenue climbed 29.8 per cent to ₹1.58 lakh crore. Consolidated EBITDA declined 13.4 per cent to ₹9,647 crore. The divergence between revenue growth and lower earnings highlights the pressure on profitability, even as the firm advanced investments in refining, gas distribution, and alternative fuels.

During the quarter, BPCL reported a refinery throughput of 10.41 million tonne, operating at 118 per cent capacity, while domestic market sales stood at 13.47 million tonne. In the same period of the previous fiscal, refineries processed 9.82 million tonne of crude oil and sold 12.67 million tonne of fuel.

The company continued investing in infrastructure, supply-chain resilience, and digital transformation. BPCL has advanced plans for a proposed 10-million-tonne-per-year greenfield refinery and petrochemical complex at Ramayapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Its board approved incorporating a wholly-owned subsidiary as a dedicated project company, pending required regulatory approvals. The announcement did not specify the project's investment outlay or construction timeline.

In regional operations, BPCL commissioned the Matia LPG bottling plant in Goalpara, Assam—its first such facility in the Northeast—and connected 1.22 lakh new households to Piped Natural Gas over the past six months. Consumer-facing rollouts included the Bharatgas Lite ZIP LPG offering and over 9,000 clean washrooms across its retail network.

BPCL is also developing specialised fuels and lower-carbon alternatives, including Extreme Weather Grade diesel for the military and a commercial flight test using aviation turbine fuel blended with 1 per cent sustainable aviation fuel. The company operates refineries in Mumbai, Kochi, and Bina with a combined capacity of about 35.3 million tonne per annum, alongside a retail network of more than 25,300 fuel stations and 6,250 LPG distributorships. BPCL targets becoming a net-zero energy company for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040.

"BPCL's latest financial results demonstrate a classic operational challenge where top-line revenue growth is undermined by external pricing constraints and margin pressures. When retail prices remain frozen despite rising operational costs and inventory losses, even strong refining margins cannot prevent a dip in net profitability. For large state-owned enterprises, balancing social pricing obligations with capital-intensive transitions toward greenfield expansions and alternative energy remains a complex fiscal balancing act." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
