Commodity derivatives trading turnover on MCX touched a record ₹62.93 lakh crore on Friday, driven by a sudden increase in gold prices and heightened participation amid volatile metal prices. Options accounted for the vast majority of the trading volume across more than 3.13 crore contracts.

NEW DELHI: Commodity derivatives trading turnover on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) reached an all-time high of ₹62.93 lakh crore on Friday. The record trading volume was driven by a sudden rise in gold prices and improved market participation amid volatile metal prices.

According to trade statistics published on the exchange website, the total futures and options turnover stood at ₹62,93,465 crore, executed across more than 3.13 crore contracts. Options trading formed the significant majority of the volume, accounting for ₹61,84,516 crore of the turnover. Meanwhile, the futures segment contributed ₹1,08,949 crore to the total figures.

This record-breaking trading session follows a series of operational measures undertaken by MCX to strengthen both its physical and derivatives market ecosystem. Earlier this year, the exchange introduced Good Delivery Norms for primary aluminium, refined copper, and refined zinc. This move established a transparent framework for the empanelment of producing plants and the acceptance of metal for delivery against exchange contracts.

The newly established framework incorporates auditing, assaying, and testing at producing plants. These steps are designed to provide market participants with greater assurance regarding the quality and overall acceptability of deliverable metal. By expanding the pool of standardised, exchange-approved supply and reinforcing confidence in the delivery mechanism, such structural measures aim to support broader participation, liquidity, and hedging activity in the underlying contracts.

Industry experts noted that the milestone points to deeper market integration. Rajeev Agarwal, National President of the Commodity and Capital Market Participants Association of India, stated that the record turnover reflects the growing depth and participation in the country's commodity derivatives market. He noted that as more participants utilise exchange-traded products for price discovery and risk management, such volumes indicate positive market evolution, with future focus remaining on broadening participation while maintaining transparency and strong risk-management standards.

Echoing similar views, Naveen Mathur, Director of Commodities, Currencies and GIFT City at IFSC, Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers, remarked that the rise in participation demonstrates the increasing relevance of organised commodity markets for hedgers, traders, and investors. He added that initiatives strengthening the linkage between physical and derivatives markets—such as standardised delivery and quality frameworks—add credibility to the ecosystem, and that continued product innovation and broader participation should help deepen India's commodity markets further.

"The record-breaking turnover on MCX highlights the growing maturity and depth of India's financial and commodity markets. When exchanges implement robust structural improvements like standardised delivery norms and quality frameworks, it directly boosts institutional and retail confidence. For the broader business and startup ecosystem, this points to healthier price discovery mechanisms and better risk management tools. As liquidity deepens in both options and futures, market participants gain a more reliable environment for hedging against price volatility, which is crucial for sustainable commercial planning." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
