New Low-Pressure Area Over Bay of Bengal Expected to Bring Fresh Rain to Central India

A new low-pressure area is set to form over the north-west Bay of Bengal over the coming days, raising expectations of a fresh spell of rain over Central India. The system is expected to take shape over the north-west Bay and adjoining West Bengal and north Odisha following the strengthening of an existing cyclonic circulation.

This development follows the movement of its predecessor low-pressure system toward south-east Uttar Pradesh. Unlike typical patterns, initial projections indicate that the new system may not track towards the Himalayan foothills. Instead, atmospheric forces originating from the South China Sea and western Pacific are expected to briefly deepen the system and steer it westward toward Central India.

The trajectory is anticipated to bring renewed rainfall to Madhya Pradesh as the monsoon regains some momentum in the region. Additional areas, including the west coast, parts of the east coast, and Tamil Nadu, could also experience renewed rainfall as the system advances into early September.

This weather pattern unfolds against the backdrop of severe floods and landslides in neighboring Nepal. However, the emerging Bay system is expected to direct moisture and rainfall westward rather than driving another major spell into the Himalayan foothills.

Data shows that the all-India rainfall deficit stood at 13 percent as of Wednesday. While the incoming system may improve local rainfall conditions in Central and coastal parts of India, current indications suggest it may not significantly alter the country's overall seasonal rainfall deficit, with no major rainfall breakthrough currently projected for Peninsular India during the first week of September.
