Advanced materials company Nexon Geochem has completed the first round of technical evaluations and benchmarking of Indian-origin raw materials for producing Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) rare-earth permanent magnets. The initiative leverages technology from Russia’s State Research and Design Institute of Rare Metal Industry (Giredmet).
As part of the technical benchmarking program, Nexon supplied Indian-origin Nd-Pr oxide, iron, and ferroboron to Giredmet. The objective was to validate the integration of these raw materials into the Giredmet Nd-Fe-B manufacturing technology platform and convert them into magnets meeting required structural and performance parameters.
The evaluation covered the chemical composition and impurity profile of the raw materials, the conversion of Nd-Pr oxide into Nd-Pr metal, material quality and microstructure, and the performance of the resulting magnets. Key parameters evaluated included BHmax, Hcj, and Br, which determine the strength, resistance, and performance capabilities of permanent magnets.
Praveen Choudhary, Founder of Nexon Geochem, stated that the development marks a critical pathway for integrating Indian-origin raw materials into the technology platform. The company's immediate focus is moving the validated route into pilot production and customer applications in India, targeting grades from N35 to N52 for sectors such as electric mobility, renewable energy, electronics, aerospace, and defense.
Konstantin Ivanovskikh, Deputy Director for Research & Innovation at Giredmet, noted that crossing this technical threshold establishes the foundation for Nexon to build an integrated Indian supply chain for high-performance permanent magnets, moving from domestic feedstock to finished products.
Following this validation, Nexon plans to mobilize its offshore pilot for customer validation in India, optimize manufacturing processes and product grades, and advance the infrastructure and execution required for commercial-scale production. The company's objective is to establish a scalable sintered NdFeB permanent magnet manufacturing facility in Hyderabad, aiming to position itself as an integrated rare earth oxide-to-magnet platform with a target production capacity of 1,200 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) by FY33.
This technical milestone follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in July 2026 between Nexon Geochem and Giredmet to jointly develop deep-processing technologies for rare-earth metal raw materials and NdFeB permanent magnets.
"The successful technical validation of domestic raw materials for NdFeB permanent magnets represents an important step toward building a localized supply chain for advanced manufacturing in India. As sectors like electric mobility, renewable energy, and electronics continue to expand, developing domestic capabilities from rare earth oxides to finished magnets will be crucial for long-term industrial self-reliance. Nexon Geochem's progress with Giredmet highlights how strategic technology partnerships can help bridge critical material gaps in the Indian manufacturing ecosystem." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
