Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited has commissioned a 100 MW group captive solar project in Kayathar, Tamil Nadu. The project is set to supply clean power to several Tata group companies and brings TPREL's utility portfolio to 12.3 GW.

NEW DELHI: Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company, has announced the successful commissioning of its 100 Megawatt (MW) Group Captive Solar Project (TNGC-2). Located across Vellalankottai and Nalandhula villages in Kayathar, Tamil Nadu, the project is designed to generate 240.63 million units (MUs) of clean electricity annually.

According to the company, the generated power will be supplied to a host of group companies. These include TP Solar Limited—Tata Power’s solar manufacturing arm—alongside Tata Electronics Private Limited and Tata Realty And Infrastructure Limited. The power generated from the installation will be transmitted through the Kayathar 400 kV Grid Substation (GSS).

A notable technical feature of the Kayathar installation is the first-of-its-kind deployment of Flexible Terrain Compatible (FTC) Single Axis Tracker technology in India. This technology is engineered to maximize operational efficiency across varying terrain conditions.

With the commissioning of this new project, TPREL’s utility portfolio now stands at 12.3 GW. This includes 7 GW of operational capacity, which is comprised of more than 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind energy assets. The remainder of the portfolio is slated for phased commissioning over the next 6 to 24 months.

"The commissioning of this 100 MW solar project highlights the growing trend of large conglomerates leveraging group captive models to secure sustainable and predictable energy sources for their manufacturing and realty arms. Incorporating advanced technologies like Flexible Terrain Compatible single-axis trackers also demonstrates how operational efficiencies can be scaled across diverse geographies. As renewable portfolios expand toward multi-gigawatt targets, efficient transmission infrastructure and phased execution will remain critical for meeting long-term commercial clean energy demands." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
