Tata Power Renewable Energy has commissioned a 72.5-megawatt solar project in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The green energy generated from this ground-mounted facility will be supplied to Tata Steel.

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) announced on Thursday the commissioning of a 72.5-megawatt (MW) solar project located in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The ground-mounted project has been executed through TP Vardhman Surya, a subsidiary of TPREL.

According to the company, the electricity generated by the facility will be supplied directly to Tata Steel. The project utilizes 1,71,360 solar modules manufactured by TP Solar Limited.

TPREL stated that the installation is expected to generate 166 million units (MUs) of green energy annually. Furthermore, the project aims to offset approximately 1,18,856 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, supporting Tata Steel's ongoing decarbonisation efforts while expanding India's renewable energy footprint.

With the addition of this Bikaner installation, TPREL's total renewable utility capacity has reached 12.3 gigawatts (GW). Out of this total capacity, around 7 GW is currently operational, comprising 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind energy.

Additionally, close to 5.3 GW of capacity remains under various stages of implementation. This pipeline includes 2.2 GW of solar projects and 3.1 GW of wind projects.

Tata Power Renewable Energy operates as a subsidiary of the Tata Power Company.

"The commissioning of this 72.5-MW solar project highlights the growing adoption of captive renewable energy by heavy industries to meet their sustainability goals. By integrating captive green power solutions, legacy enterprises can effectively lower their carbon footprint while ensuring long-term energy security. As companies like TPREL continue to scale their operational capacity—currently sitting at 12.3 GW—it reflects a steady shift in India's industrial sector toward large-scale clean energy transition." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
