HYDERABAD: The Telangana government announced on Thursday that it will launch a new life insurance scheme alongside the second phase of its free saree distribution programme. The initiatives are scheduled to begin on November 19, coinciding with the birth anniversary of the late prime minister Indira Gandhi.
Addressing reporters following a state cabinet meeting, Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy stated that the launch event will take place at the district headquarters town of Siddipet. The life insurance initiative, named 'Indiramma' Jeevita Beema, will formally begin accepting applications at gram panchayats and municipal wards. The saree distribution programme marks the rollout of its second phase following an initial distribution round.
In a structural administrative shift, the cabinet also decided to divide the existing joint commission into separate commissions for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). Previously, a single unified SC and ST Commission functioned within the state.
During the briefing, Minister Reddy outlined the state's broader economic and investment objectives, stating that the government aims to position Telangana to compete globally rather than solely with other Indian states. To drive economic outreach, ministers and senior officials have been assigned specific responsibilities to organize the upcoming 'Invest Telangana Global Summit', which is scheduled to be held in the state on December 7, 8, and 9.
Addressing infrastructure developments, Reddy confirmed that all testing related to repairs for damages at the Kaleshwaram project, as suggested by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), will be completed. He added that the subsequent repair work on the project's barrages will be executed transparently.
"The upcoming Invest Telangana Global Summit presents a significant opportunity for the state to attract business investments and foster regional entrepreneurship. Government initiatives that balance social welfare programs, such as insurance and distribution schemes, with large-scale economic events help build a stable foundation for industrial growth and investor confidence in the local ecosystem." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
