Tier-1 automotive component supplier Uno Minda has secured approval for a fresh ₹85-crore investment to expand its sunroof manufacturing capacity at Bawal, Haryana. According to a regulatory filing on November 5, the decision follows additional customer orders in the segment.
This new approval adds to four previously announced projects valued at ₹1,415 crore, bringing the combined total of these five investments—including one linked to an associate company—to ₹1,500 crore. The broader capital expenditure programme includes several major outlays, such as ₹510 crore for an aluminium casting plant in Hosur, ₹155 crore to expand two-wheeler alloy-wheel capacity at Kharkhoda, and ₹80 crore for a moulding facility in Bengaluru. Additionally, ₹670 crore has been earmarked for a plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar by Toyoda Gosei South India, a subsidiary of an Uno Minda associate, to manufacture automotive components.
Separately, Uno Minda's November investor presentation outlines 16 ongoing projects with an estimated total cost of ₹5,287 crore. As of September 30, the company had incurred ₹1,628 crore on these projects. This capital expenditure pipeline reflects broader automotive trends including rising OEM demand, premiumisation, and electrification, which are collectively increasing the value of components supplied per vehicle.
The newly approved sunroof production capacity at Bawal is slated for completion by the second quarter of FY28. Meanwhile, the original ₹63-crore facility, approved in 2024 under a licensing agreement with Japan’s Aisin, is expected to commence production by the end of FY27. When last quantified in August, sunroof orders held an annual peak revenue potential exceeding ₹500 crore.
Uno Minda supplies major automakers including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Hero MotoCorp. During the July-September quarter, the company reported consolidated revenue growth of 38.2% to ₹6,655.42 crore, up from ₹4,814.03 crore a year earlier. Consolidated profit attributable to shareholders rose 38.1% to ₹419.72 crore from ₹303.99 crore. Consolidated EBITDA increased by 32.9% to ₹733.27 crore, though the EBITDA margin narrowed slightly to 11.02% from 11.46%.
Segment-wise performance showed strong gains across key divisions. Castings revenue climbed 57% to ₹1,441 crore, aided by a 64% growth in four-wheeler alloy-wheel sales and a 65% growth in aluminium die-casting sales. Switches generated ₹1,609 crore, up 37%, while lighting contributed ₹1,381 crore, up 25%. Seating revenue increased 34% to ₹476 crore.
Green mobility operations, which encompass electric systems and alternative-fuel components, generated ₹649 crore, roughly double the figure recorded in the same period last year. Revenue from electric two- and three-wheeler systems grew 53% to ₹291 crore. Meanwhile, exports shipped from India surged 77% to ₹218 crore in the September quarter, moving from ₹123 crore a year earlier and increasing their share of consolidated revenue to 3.3%.
Managing Director Ravi Mehra noted that the company continued to outperform underlying automotive market trends. While strong OEM demand, rising component content per vehicle, and growing exports present clear growth opportunities, the company's performance highlights the ongoing importance of managing large-scale capital investments effectively.
"Uno Minda's strategic capital expenditure highlights how established Tier-1 suppliers are actively scaling up manufacturing capabilities to meet the growing demand for premium automotive features like sunroofs and electric mobility components. Expanding production capacity in alignment with rising OEM requirements is a sound growth strategy, though managing large-scale project pipelines requires careful execution to protect operating margins and sustain long-term cash flow." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
