Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has formally refuted recent media reports claiming that it has suspended plans to manufacture three electric vehicle models in India. The company stated that its production and assembly schedules remain unaffected.
Earlier reports had alleged that the automaker instructed its suppliers to halt all activities related to three specific programmes. These included a two-door SUV known as the VF3, along with the VF6 and VF7 SUVs, which are imported as kits from Vietnam for assembly in India.
Addressing these claims, VinFast clarified in an official statement that production plans for models currently being sold in the country have not changed or been suspended. The company confirmed it will continue the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly of these models at its Thoothukudi facility to serve the Indian market.
VinFast reiterated that India remains a key market within its long-term business and manufacturing strategy. The company noted that it has conducted multiple market research studies and car clinics to evaluate local consumer preferences regarding models such as the VF6 and VF7.
As part of its broader localization efforts, VinFast is actively engaging with domestic suppliers. The manufacturer has organized supplier conferences in both Vietnam and India, involving over 300 Indian suppliers, to explore collaboration opportunities and strengthen its supply chain in alignment with the "Make in India" initiative.
Additionally, the company is coordinating with relevant government agencies to support policy frameworks for global EV manufacturers looking to expand their investments in India. VinFast recently received investment approval for Phase 2 of its Thoothukudi plant expansion, which the company views as a key milestone in expanding its manufacturing capacity and reaffirming its long-term commitment to the Indian market.
"VinFast's swift clarification regarding its manufacturing operations in India highlights the importance of clear communication in capital-intensive sectors like electric vehicles. For global entrants establishing localized supply chains and regional manufacturing bases, maintaining transparent engagement with local suppliers, regulatory bodies, and consumers is vital to sustaining investor confidence and navigating early-stage market expansion successfully." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
