AHMEDABAD — Maternal healthcare providers in Western India are increasingly managing complex clinical cases, driven by rising rates of high-risk pregnancies nationwide. According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data cited by Zydus Hospitals, nearly half of all pregnancies in India are classified as high-risk, with a national maternal mortality rate of approximately 88 deaths per 100,000 live births, against a target of 70 by 2030.
Zydus Hospitals in Ahmedabad operates a department of gynaecology and obstetrics equipped to handle high-volume, high-risk cases including placenta abnormalities, multiple gestations, preterm complications, and pre-existing medical conditions. The facility includes an in-house blood bank, a dedicated gynaecology intensive care unit (ICU), a neonatal ICU (NICU), and round-the-clock specialists across obstetrics, fetal medicine, anaesthesia, and neonatology.
Clinical teams at the hospital have recently managed several complex cases. In one instance, a 30-year-old patient presenting with placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) combined with placenta previa—a severe condition linked to prior caesarean deliveries—was successfully treated. The multidisciplinary team performed an upper-segment caesarean section followed by an obstetric hysterectomy, involving urology specialists to address bladder wall involvement, supported by blood and plasma transfusions.
In another case managed by the hospital's fertility and IVF unit, a couple with a history of unsuccessful fertility treatments achieved a successful delivery following three embryo transfers, selective fetal reduction, and cervical encerclage. The twins were delivered extremely preterm at 25 weeks and 4 days, requiring extensive care in the in-house NICU before recovery.
The department also reported successful outcomes in managing chronic cervical insufficiency through laparoscopic cerclage procedures, allowing patients with histories of mid-trimester miscarriages to carry pregnancies to term under close clinical observation.
Beyond its main facility in Ahmedabad, Zydus has extended its specialized gynaecology and obstetric services to other centers in the region, including Vadodara and Anand, aiming to improve access to advanced clinical care for high-risk patients across Western India.
