Apple Prepares Mac Mini Update Amid Leadership Transition and Broader Product Rollout

Apple Inc. is preparing to introduce a new version of its Mac mini desktop computer for the first time in almost two years, according to people familiar with the matter. The new desktop could debut as soon as the coming days, potentially preceding Apple's September event where the company is scheduled to introduce its next-generation iPhones. Apple has tested versions of the new desktop featuring both the M5 and M6 generations of its processor line.

The upcoming hardware upgrade follows a recent increase in demand for the current Mac mini, which has gained popularity as a tool for running artificial intelligence applications locally. However, memory-chip shortages have presented supply chain challenges, making it difficult for Apple to maintain consistent stock levels. Deliveries for the current model have experienced delays lasting weeks or months, and it remains unclear how the introduction of the new model will impact existing wait times.

The Mac mini launch is part of a broader wave of hardware releases planned for the second half of the year. Apple is expected to hold an iPhone launch presentation on September 9, where it plans to introduce the company's first foldable smartphone and the iPhone 18 Pro line. Additional product updates include new Apple Watches featuring fitness tracking upgrades and a ceramic-case option for Series 12 models, alongside fresh AirPods 5 earbuds.

The company is also scheduling a revamped iPad mini with an OLED screen to arrive by the end of October, aiming to bring the tablet closer in line with more premium iPad models. Furthermore, Apple is on track to debut its first-ever smart home device equipped with a screen, alongside a new Apple TV set-top box and a HomePod mini smart speaker. Future Mac updates later in the pipeline include an iMac with new color options and a refreshed entry-level MacBook Pro utilizing M6 chips, as well as Apple's first touch-screen computer integrated into 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED screens.

Significantly, the Mac mini release is expected to be the final new product launch overseen by Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook. Cook is handing over the reins to John Ternus on September 1, leaving Ternus to oversee the rollout of the foldable iPhone and other major pipeline products.

In addition to product updates, the Mac mini is central to Apple's manufacturing initiatives in the United States. Earlier this year, Apple announced plans to begin producing the Mac mini in Houston later in 2026, following a factory tour by Cook alongside officials from the Trump administration. Apple previously assembled the Mac Pro domestically, though that product line was discontinued earlier this year.
