India's benchmark 10-year government security (6.94% 2036) yield climbed to a more than three-year high of 7.44%, driven by a surge in Brent crude futures to $110 a barrel. The increase follows growing uncertainty regarding the outlook in West Asia.
The economy’s benchmark 10-year bond yields were last recorded at this level on March 10, 2023, during a period when consumer price (CPI) inflation stood at 5.66%. Bond yields have maintained an upward trajectory for the majority of the year. Yields on the paper have hardened by 40 basis points over the past month alone, and by 85 basis points since January 1, 2026, predating the intensification of Iran-US tensions.
Oil prices appreciated by 1.74% to reach $110 a barrel over a 24-hour period. Weekly trends indicate that crude prices have returned to levels last observed in May 2026, when negotiations between the US and Iran faced uncertainty amid exchanges of attacks. The recent climb to $110 per barrel has occurred at a relatively more gradual pace compared to previous fluctuations.
Treasury heads across banking institutions had previously anticipated yields reaching 7.4%, noting that bond yields could potentially climb as high as 7.5% under current oil price conditions. According to treasury experts, oil prices will need to decline and remain stable at lower levels for bond yields to experience any meaningful easing.
Concurrently, the rupee-dollar exchange rate moved upward, increasing by approximately 11 paise to stand at ₹94.9.
"The hardening of 10-year G-sec yields to 7.44% alongside oil hitting $110 a barrel signals tightening macroeconomic conditions that businesses must monitor closely. Rising bond yields typically translate to higher borrowing costs across the broader financial ecosystem, which can impact capital availability and debt servicing for growing enterprises. Entrepreneurs and financial planners need to factor in these macroeconomic pressures, particularly regarding foreign exchange movements like the rupee trading at ₹94.9, as cost structures and input expenses adjust to global commodity cycles." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
