Precious metals experienced a significant correction last week, wiping out more than Rs 6,000 from gold prices. Gold futures for October delivery on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) dropped by Rs 6,157, or 3.8 per cent, to settle at Rs 1.56 lakh per 10 grams. Meanwhile, silver futures for the September contract fell by Rs 9,893, or 4 per cent, to reach Rs 2.36 lakh per kilogram.
In international markets, Comex gold futures for December delivery declined by USD 150.7, or 3.2 per cent, ending the week at USD 4,680.6 per ounce. Silver futures dropped by USD 2.56, or 3.64 per cent, to settle at USD 67.78 per ounce.
Analysts note that selling pressure intensified following commentary on inflation and monetary policy from Federal Reserve officials, which triggered profit booking across bullion markets. Market participants are now attempting to price in the probability of a September Federal Reserve policy change as the new month begins.
The upcoming week's calendar includes crucial macroeconomic indicators from major economies. Key data points to watch include manufacturing and services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) readings from India and other major economies, inflation figures from the Eurozone and Germany, and US labour-market indicators such as non-farm payrolls, unemployment data, and ADP non-farm employment change.
In addition to macroeconomic data, geopolitical developments are expected to influence market direction. Traders are monitoring the US-Iran conflict, with updates surrounding the Strait of Hormuz remaining a critical factor for oil prices and overall inflation expectations.
Despite the recent downward movement, market data highlights differing performances over the broader period. Silver outperformed gold in August, registering a gain of around 21 per cent compared to the yellow metal's 15.7 per cent increase.
Market experts indicate that the interplay between currency movements, labour-market reports, Federal Reserve expectations, and geopolitical headlines will dictate whether bullion prices stabilise or face further profit booking in the near term.
"The recent correction in gold and silver prices highlights how sensitive commodity markets are to macroeconomic announcements and central bank policy shifts. For businesses and investors, such volatility underscores the importance of closely tracking global inflation trends, currency movements, and employment data. As markets price in upcoming Federal Reserve decisions and navigate geopolitical developments, maintaining a cautious and data-driven approach to risk management remains essential for navigating uncertainty in the financial markets." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
