Transport and autorickshaw bodies in Delhi have demanded an immediate revision of fares following a sharp increase in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices. The unions have threatened to launch a strike on September 9 if authorities do not address their demands.
According to Indraprastha Gas Ltd, the price of CNG in Delhi and adjoining cities increased by ₹3.89 per kg. The company stated that the adjustment was driven by a significant rise in imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) rates in the spot market, fueled by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
With this latest revision, the price of CNG in Delhi has reached ₹86.98 per kg. Transport associations note that CNG prices have been on an upward trajectory over the past two to three months, accumulating an increase of approximately ₹10 to ₹11 per kg.
Rajendra Soni, General Secretary of the Auto Rickshaw Association and Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union, stated that the sudden price hike has placed a heavy financial burden on drivers. He called on the Delhi government to implement an immediate fare increase within a week or provide a subsidy on CNG prices. Soni warned that failure to act would result in a transport strike on September 9.
The price revision has also raised concerns within the broader transport sector. Rajendra Kapoor, President of the All India Motor and Goods Transport Association, noted that the cost escalation extends beyond fuel expenses alone. He stated that the hike would directly impact consumers, the transport industry as a whole, and eventually lead to higher prices for essential commodities across the Delhi-NCR region.
