Colgate has announced the appointment of Manish Anandani as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective September 28. Anandani, a 13-year company veteran with three decades of FMCG experience, returns to the oral care leader to succeed current MD and CEO Prabha Narasimhan, who is moving to a larger Asia-Pacific role.
Anandani steps into the role with specific operational challenges to address. Days before the leadership transition, Narasimhan acknowledged during an August 17 analyst call that the Palmolive brand had underperformed. Additionally, Global CEO Noel Wallace previously noted that the India business had become distracted by its push into the Ayurveda segment.
Despite these headwinds, Narasimhan's tenure saw strong growth in the premium portfolio, which expanded five times faster than the broader market. Financial services firm Nuvama welcomed Anandani's appointment, indicating that the leadership overhang has been removed and pointing to his background in sales, marketing, and e-commerce as key assets.
The incoming leadership faces a bifurcated consumer base in India. On one hand, neighbourhood stores continue to rely on ₹10 and ₹20 packs for mass market reach. On the other hand, a separate segment is transitioning toward specialised oral-care products, increasingly utilizing e-commerce and quick commerce channels. With premium toothpaste currently accounting for less than 19 per cent of the category, market observers note significant room for expansion.
Beyond portfolio diversification, industry data highlights a fundamental consumption gap. Approximately 76 per cent of urban Indians and 45 per cent of rural consumers still do not brush twice daily, while the average toothbrush replacement cycle sits at roughly nine months. For the market leader, encouraging increased usage frequency among existing consumers remains a key priority alongside securing market share.
Kranti Bhathini, Director of Equity Strategy at WealthMills Securities, noted the complexity of the market awaiting the returning executive. Anandani must revive momentum in urban general trade, safeguard entry-price consumers buying ₹10-20 packs, accelerate premiumisation, and scale e-commerce and quick commerce channels simultaneously.
Having previously served across India, Southeast Asia, and global roles before leaving the company in 2018, Anandani returns to execute a multifaceted growth strategy focused on protecting mass consumption, expanding premium offerings, and driving higher usage frequency across the board.
"The appointment of an industry veteran like Manish Anandani highlights the importance of leadership stability when navigating complex consumer markets. Managing both mass-market entry products and high-growth premium segments requires deep operational familiarity. For established corporations and growing businesses alike, balancing traditional distribution networks with emerging digital channels is critical to sustaining long-term growth and market leadership." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
